The investigation became public.
Reporters discovered Ethan and Emily had dated.
The story wrote itself.

Ethan’s lawyer suggested attacking Emily.
“Conflict of interest.”
“Retaliation.”
“Abuse of control.”
For one desperate evening, Ethan considered it.
Then he saw the investigation timeline.
Emily had disclosed their history before the acquisition closed.
Independent counsel had been appointed.
She had recused herself from all disciplinary votes involving him.
The board had documented everything.
There was no revenge case.
Only embarrassment.
Ethan finally told his lawyer:
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because it isn’t true.”
That was the first decent decision he had made in months.
He issued a statement.
Not blaming Emily.
Not blaming Carter Holdings.
He acknowledged violations of company ethics and failures of judgment.
Jason and Malcolm faced far more serious investigations.
Authorities eventually became involved in the wider financial scheme.
Ethan cooperated.
His cooperation did not erase what he had done.
But it mattered.
Vanessa called once.
“I saw your statement.”
“Yeah.”
“That sounded like you.”
“The good version or bad version?”
“The version that stopped performing.”
He laughed sadly.
“I don’t know who that is yet.”
“Figure it out.”
