Chapter 5 - Why Emily Had Hidden Her Name
After the restaurant incident became gossip inside Carter Holdings, one board member asked Emily privately:
“Why did you hide your identity from him?”
Emily answered:
“I didn’t hide everything.”
Ethan knew her name.
Emily Carter.
He simply never asked which Carters.
She had told him her grandfather built businesses.
Ethan assumed small businesses.
She said her family worked in hospitality.
He pictured restaurants.
She said she wanted to understand money before living with it.
He thought she meant budgeting.
“Did you test him?”
The board member asked.
“At first?”
“Yes.”
Emily admitted it.
Her grandfather taught her:
Never marry someone who changes after seeing your balance sheet.
So she lived modestly.
Not poor.
Simply normal.
She rented an apartment.
Worked.
Budgeted.
Bought secondhand furniture.
For nearly two years, Ethan seemed happy.
Then he joined an investment bank.
His social circle changed.
Restaurants became status tests.
Watches became identity.
Friends compared salaries.
Emily watched him change.
One night he told her:
“I can’t keep living small.”
She answered:
“Then don’t.”
He assumed that meant she could not follow.
Eventually he left.
Emily never revealed the truth afterward because she did not want him returning for money.
It hurt.
But she moved on.
Then fate made things complicated.
Carter Holdings began studying Stratton Technologies.
Emily did not know Ethan worked there until late in due diligence.
She disclosed the relationship immediately to the board.
Independent directors handled portions related to him.
She recused herself from his performance evaluation where legally necessary.
She refused to use ownership as revenge.
Her grandfather had also taught her:
If power becomes personal, you are already misusing it.
That principle would soon matter.
