Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

I sat in the darkness of Violet's bedroom for a long time after hanging up with Marcus. The silence around me felt heavy, suffocating. Every instinct honed over two decades of asymmetric warfare screamed at me to move, to strike, to level buildings until nothing was left. But discipline kept me anchored. A sniper doesn't fire at shadows; he waits until the target steps into the crosshairs.

Apex Global Security. Victor Sterling thought he could send thugs to torture a teenage girl to get to me. He thought my absence meant vulnerability. He didn't understand that by touching Violet, he had signed his own death warrant and the death warrant of every man who set foot inside my home.

My phone buzzed again. This time it was an encrypted data transfer from Marcus: GPS coordinates, residential addresses, and vehicle tracking logs for Derek Vance and two other Apex operatives currently stationed in the local area—Marcus Cole and Travis Miller. Three men. Three domestic terrorists wearing corporate suits and tactical vests.

I stood up, walked to my duffel bag in the hallway, and unzipped the hidden compartment in the lining.

Inside lay my old kit: a matte-black Sig Sauer P226 with a threaded barrel and a titanium suppressor, four double-stack magazines loaded with hollow-point rounds, a roll of reinforced flex-cuffs, a set of industrial lock picks, and my combat knife—a seven-inch fixed-blade custom made from high-carbon steel. I strapped the holster around my thigh, pulled a dark hoodie over my shoulders, and checked the magazine. Fully loaded. One in the chamber.

Before I left the house, I walked back down the hall to the spot where Violet had fallen. I knelt down, touching the faint discoloration on the hardwood floor where the cleaning crew hadn't quite managed to scrub away every trace of her blood.

"Rest easy, baby," I whispered into the empty house. "Dad's going to go hunting."

My first stop was a dilapidated industrial warehouse on the outskirts of Oak Creek, registered under a front company called Apex Logistics. According to Marcus's real-time tracker, Derek Vance and his two associates were gathered there to debrief and await further orders from Sterling.

I parked my rental car half a mile away in the dense thicket of a pine forest, killing the headlights and coasting into the brush. I moved through the undergrowth like a ghost, every step calculated, silent, and deadly. In the military, they called me the Reaper. Tonight, that title wasn't a metaphor.
