Chapter 10 - The Long Road Home

Three weeks later, the spring sunlight streaming through the hospital window felt warm, golden, and alive.

The federal indictments against Victor Sterling and Apex Global Security were front-page news across every major network, dismantling the corrupt private military empire once and for all. Detective Vance’s department had undergone a complete internal purge, rooting out the compromised elements that had tried to cover up the attack.

I sat in the same molded plastic chair beside Violet's hospital bed, peeling an orange with my pocketknife.

Slowly, the dark eyelashes fluttered. A soft, groaning sigh escaped her lips.

I dropped the orange, stood up, and leaned over the bed. "Violet? Baby, can you hear me?"

Her blue eyes—clear, bright, and filled with life—slowly opened. She blinked against the bright hospital light, looking around the room before her gaze finally landed on my face. A weak, familiar smile touched the corners of her bruised lips.

"Hey, Dad," she whispered, her voice raspy from disuse. "Did you... did you miss my birthday?"

I felt a hot tear slip down my cheek, the first I had shed since the night I walked into that silent graveyard. I took her small, warm hand in mine and kissed her knuckles gently.

"I missed it by a few weeks, sweetheart," I smiled, my voice thick with emotion. "But I'm right here now. And I'm never leaving again."

Violet squeezed my hand back, her grip stronger than it had been in weeks. "Happy birthday to me, Dad."

"Happy birthday, my little girl," I whispered, looking out the window at the bright morning sky, knowing the war was finally over, and our family was safe at last.
