Chapter 8 - The First Betrayal

The secret about Adrian’s birth did not make Mara love him less. It made her understand why Beatrice had spent thirty-seven years treating him like property.

Julian warned her not to confront Adrian without proof. Mara agreed, then spent the night unable to stop imagining the conversation.

She remembered Beatrice correcting Adrian’s posture at family dinners, choosing his clothes, and answering questions directed at him. She remembered Adrian shrinking whenever his mother entered a room, then becoming cruel the moment they were alone.

Control had moved through the family like an inherited disease.

The next morning, Isabel called Julian’s office.

“I want to meet Mara,” she said.

They chose a public library with a security desk and glass walls. Isabel arrived without makeup, carrying a paper bag and wearing a coat too large for her shoulders.

“I was the one who sent the first message,” she said.

Mara studied her. “The blue ledger.”

“I photographed it before Beatrice moved it. I sent the pictures because I knew she was going to use your trust against you.”

“You also stole it.”

“I took it from your apartment because Beatrice ordered me to.”

“Then why leave a page behind?”

Isabel looked down. “I wanted you to know I had done it.”

Julian remained standing beside Mara. “Start at the beginning.”

Isabel told them that Beatrice had adopted Adrian after a failed pregnancy and hidden the adoption from nearly everyone. Adrian’s biological mother had been Beatrice’s younger cousin, Celia, who died shortly after giving birth. Beatrice had convinced her husband to raise the baby as their own because she feared losing control of the family name.

“Adrian knows?” Mara asked.

“He found out last year,” Isabel said. “He confronted her. She told him she would disinherit him unless he followed her plan.”

“The heir plan.”

Isabel nodded. “My father left the family business in debt. Beatrice used the trust money to keep it alive. She believed that if Adrian produced a recognized descendant before the distribution date, she could claim the assets as guardian of the family line.”

“But Adrian is not the biological heir.”

“The trust does not require blood. It requires a child legally recognized as his.”

Mara felt sick. “They were going to create a child on paper.”

“A birth record, a physician’s statement, photographs. They had someone willing to cooperate.”

“Dr. Simon Vale.”

Isabel nodded again. “He is Elena’s uncle. He lost his license years ago, but Beatrice pays him through Prado Strategies.”

The plan was larger than a fake bump. They intended to manufacture an entire family.

“Why did you help them at all?” Mara asked.

Isabel took a breath. “Because Beatrice threatened to expose me as the person who had been moving money from the stores. She made the transfers look like mine.”

“Were they?”

“Some were. I borrowed money to leave. I repaid most of it. But Beatrice kept the records and used them to control me.”

Julian asked, “Who edited the videos?”

“I did the first ones.”

Mara’s jaw tightened.

“I stopped after the brunch,” Isabel continued. “The video from the club was edited by Victor’s assistant, but I uploaded it. I am not asking you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

Isabel reached into the paper bag and pulled out a small digital recorder. “This is why I came.”

On the recording, Beatrice said, “If Mara files first, Adrian will accuse her of abandoning the marriage. The court will see a woman who left a pregnant man and his dependent mother.”

Adrian answered, “And if Elena refuses?”

“Then we use the hair.”

Mara’s breath caught.

Beatrice continued, “Her hair is still in the envelope. A lab can show she was in the bedroom. We tell the police she attacked you, cut herself, and staged the rest.”

The recording ended.

Mara looked at Isabel. “You kept my hair?”

“Beatrice did. I saw the envelope in her desk.”

“Where is it now?”

“At the family house.”

Mara’s phone rang. It was Denise.

“Mara, the board has approved your full return,” Denise said. “They also want you to know that someone submitted a complaint claiming you misused company funds.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“We’re investigating,” Denise continued. “But your evidence has already changed the direction.”

“I understand.”

After the call, Mara turned to Julian. “I want to go back to the house.”

“For the envelope?”

“For everything.”

Julian shook his head. “We need a warrant or a court order.”

Isabel spoke softly. “You won’t need one tomorrow.”

“Why?”

“Beatrice is hosting a public party.”

Isabel’s mouth twisted into a bitter smile. “She wants to announce the baby again. This time, she plans to bring the entire family, the press, and a notary.”

Mara thought of the words beneath Elena’s photograph.

May you like

Finally, an heir.

“Then let her announce it,” Mara said. “And let’s make sure everyone is watching when the truth arrives.”
