Chapter 3 - The Announcement

The announcement arrived during Mara’s first leadership meeting as Regional Sales Director. A notification flashed across the presentation screen because someone had connected an unfamiliar device to the conference-room display.

Beatrice’s voice filled the room.

“Our family is blessed to welcome the next generation.”

The image changed to a glossy photograph of Elena Prado in a flowing white dress, one hand curved beneath her stomach. Adrian stood behind her with both palms on her shoulders. Beatrice was positioned in the center, radiant and triumphant.

At the bottom of the image were the words Finally, an heir.

No one in the conference room moved.

Mara’s supervisor, Denise Park, reached for the remote. “What is this?”

“A family announcement,” Mara said.

Another image appeared. This one showed Mara at a restaurant, her face turned toward a male colleague. It had been cropped so the colleague’s wife was no longer visible on the other side of the table.

The room filled with whispers.

Mara walked to the console and disconnected the device. “This was unauthorized.”

Denise’s expression softened, but her voice stayed professional. “We need to pause the meeting.”

Mara’s phone rang. It was Adrian.

“Did you enjoy your little presentation?” he asked.

“You hacked my meeting.”

“I shared the truth.”

“You shared an edited photograph.”

“Resign by Friday, and I’ll keep the rest private.”

“What rest?”

He laughed. “You’ll see.”

The call ended.

Julian advised Mara not to respond, but silence became impossible by noon. Beatrice had posted the announcement publicly. Relatives, former clients, and neighbors filled the comments with congratulations. Several people added heart emojis beneath remarks about Mara being replaced.

Kaye sat across from Mara in a small room at the office. “Denise wants you to take administrative leave until the social-media issue settles.”

“Does she believe them?”

“She believes something is happening. That’s not the same thing.”

Mara looked at the promotion plaque on her desk. “I worked twelve years for this.”

“You still have it.”

“They’re trying to make it look like I’m the scandal.”

Kaye placed a folder on the table. “Then we stop letting them write the story.”

That evening, Mara received an invitation to the Dela Cruz family brunch. The message came from Beatrice and included a photograph of Elena’s supposed ultrasound. The image had been enlarged until the details blurred.

Bring your dignity, the message said. We will bring the truth.

Julian wanted Mara to stay away. Priya had not yet confirmed the ledger’s origin, and Adrian’s threat suggested more evidence had been manufactured.

“If I don’t go,” Mara said, “they’ll tell everyone I’m afraid.”

“They will tell everyone whatever benefits them,” Julian replied.

“Then I’ll give them something else to repeat.”

The brunch took place at Beatrice’s club, in a private room decorated with white roses and silver balloons. Elena sat beside Adrian wearing a pale blue dress. Her stomach was prominent beneath the fabric.

Beatrice rose as Mara entered. “There she is. The woman who tried to destroy our family.”

Several relatives turned to look.

Mara kept walking. “I came because I wanted to hear the truth from the people who keep posting it.”

Adrian stood. “You shouldn’t be here.”

“You invited me.”

“My mother invited you to take responsibility.”

Elena lowered her eyes. She looked frightened, but Mara noticed that her left hand kept pressing the underside of the rounded stomach, as though checking that it remained in place.

Beatrice lifted a champagne glass. “To Adrian and Elena, and to the child who will restore our name.”

“Restore your name from what?” Mara asked.

The room fell silent.

Beatrice’s smile tightened. “Your selfishness has cost this family enough.”

“Then show everyone the trust documents.”

Adrian went still.

Mara removed a copy of the ledger from her bag and placed it on the table. She had brought only photographed pages, not the original.

“Why does my grandmother’s trust appear in your accounts? Why did you write ‘heir expenses’ beside transfers made from my savings? And who is Dr. Simon Vale?”

Elena looked sharply at Beatrice.

That reaction was small, but Mara saw it.

Beatrice slammed her palm on the table. “You stole that ledger.”

“You wrote it.”

Adrian grabbed the pages. “These are fabricated.”

“Then call the police.”

He hesitated.

The hesitation spread through the room like a stain.

A cousin named Marisol whispered, “Adrian, what did you do?”

Beatrice turned on her. “Stay out of this.”

Elena suddenly gasped and clutched her stomach.

Adrian rushed to her. “Are you all right?”

“I’m fine,” she said, but her voice trembled.

Mara watched the rounded shape shift slightly beneath the dress. Not like a body moving. Like something sliding.

Then Elena’s phone rang. She glanced at the screen and paled.

“Who is it?” Beatrice demanded.

Elena stood too quickly. The white chair scraped backward. For a split second, the false stomach sagged toward her knees before she caught it with both hands.

Mara saw it. So did Kaye, who had entered behind her with Julian.

Beatrice did not see. She was still shouting at Adrian.

Julian leaned close to Mara. “We need to leave before this becomes dangerous.”

Mara looked at Elena’s frightened face. The phone kept ringing in her hand.

Before Mara could move, Elena answered.

“You said she would never find out,” a man’s voice said loudly enough for everyone to hear.

Elena dropped the phone.

May you like

Adrian turned toward her.

And Beatrice finally noticed that the miracle beneath Elena’s dress was no longer sitting where it belonged.
