Chapter 3 - My Mother Had Been Paying HerselfThe household audit took forty-eight hours.

The result made me sick.

The missing wages had been routed into a personal expense account controlled by Linda.

Not millions.

Not corporate-level fraud.

But enough.

$47,600 over eleven months.

Housekeeping.

Gardening.

Grocery reimbursements.

Maintenance.

She reduced actual services and kept the budgets unchanged.

My sisters received some of it.

Olivia’s car lease.

Madison’s credit-card payments.

Chloe’s vacation.

I confronted them together.

Madison cried first.

“Mom said you knew.”

Olivia was angrier.

“You’re worth hundreds of millions.”

“That makes stealing acceptable?”

“We weren’t stealing!”

“What do you call taking money without permission?”

Linda slammed her hand down.

“Enough.”

I looked at her.

“You are living in a house I own.”

“You invited us.”

“Yes.”

“I gave you access.”

“Yes.”

“I trusted you.”

Her expression changed.

“I raised you.”

There it was.

The debt she believed never expired.

“I know.”

“You would have nothing without me.”

“Maybe.”

“And now you’re humiliating your own mother because your wife had to clean?”

“No.”

I stood.

“I’m removing access because you converted generosity into entitlement.”

Emily appeared at the doorway.

Mom immediately pointed toward her.

“This is because of you.”

Emily flinched.

I stepped between them.

“No.”

My mother looked at me.

“This is because I finally looked.”

That distinction mattered.

May you like

Emily had not destroyed anything.

Evidence had.
