Chapter 8 - The Verdict and Judgment

The judge took a thirty-minute recess to review the final sentencing guidelines.

When court reconvened, her expression was solemn and unyielding. She looked down from the elevated bench directly at my mother, who was trembling slightly now beneath the weight of inevitable reality.

"Helen Vance," the judge began, her voice ringing clear across the silent room. "The actions you committed on the date of your daughter's baby shower represent a profound betrayal of the most sacred trust known to humanity: the protection of a mother over her child. You utilized violence, deceit, and intimidation in pursuit of personal financial gain, attempting to mask your crimes behind the facade of familial authority."

My mother opened her mouth to interrupt, but the judge raised a hand sharply.

"Do not speak, Ms. Vance. Your words have already damned you."

The judge cleared her throat and delivered the sentence:

"For the charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon causing great bodily harm, attempted robbery, and domestic abuse, this court sentences you to fifteen years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first ten years. Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is issued prohibiting any contact whatsoever with Chloe Vance, Ethan Vance, and minor child Lily Rose Vance."

The gavel came down with a sharp, resounding crack.

Bang.

The sound echoed through the courtroom like a closing vault door.

My mother let out a strangled, pathetic gasp, slumping forward onto the defense table as the bailiff stepped up behind her, unlocked her handcuffs to adjust them, and led her away through the side exit. She didn't look back at me. She didn't look back at Kyle, who sat weeping quietly in the back row. She simply vanished into the corridor of the justice system, her reign of terror officially at an end.

As we walked out of the courthouse into the warm afternoon sunlight, the flashing cameras of the reporters blinded us for a moment, but Ethan pulled me close, wrapping his arm around my waist.

"It's over," Ethan whispered into my ear.

"No," I smiled, looking up at him with tears of joy in my eyes. "It's just beginning."
