Chapter 5 - The Web of Deceit Unravels

While I recovered in the hospital under the watchful care of nurses and the constant, comforting presence of Ethan, the outside world was undergoing a seismic shift.
The video from the baby shower had not stayed confined to the reception hall television.
Mara, acting as our public spokesperson and legal strategist, had uploaded the unedited cloud stream to major social media platforms within two hours of the incident. She captioned it simply: “This is what happens when greed outweighs maternal love. Protect mothers. Protect babies. Justice for Chloe.”
The internet exploded.
Within twenty-four hours, the video had amassed over twenty million views. News outlets picked up the story, dubbing it "The Iron Rod Greed Attack." Public outrage was absolute and unanimous. My mother's social circle—the country club acquaintances she had spent decades trying to impress—vanished overnight. Her phone calls went unanswered; her dinner invitations were blocked.
Back at our family home, Kyle found himself caught in the fallout.
As my mother's primary enabler and the person who had tried to smear my reputation on camera, Kyle faced immediate consequences at his job. Corporate leadership at the financial firm where he worked reviewed the viral footage, saw him actively filming and narrating a violent felony while lying about the victim, and terminated his employment for gross misconduct and violation of company ethics.
Desperate, Kyle showed up at the hospital on the third day, demanding to see me.
Security intercepted him before he even reached the maternity ward, but Ethan went down to the lobby to handle him face-to-face.
Through the glass doors of the security checkpoint, I watched Ethan stand tall, his arms crossed, looking down at my panicked, furious brother.
"You can't keep me away!" Kyle yelled, his voice carrying into the waiting area. "She's my sister! Mom made a mistake, okay? It was a heat-of-the-moment thing! You guys are blowing this way out of proportion!"
Ethan didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. Every word he spoke carried the weight of absolute finality.
"A mistake, Kyle?" Ethan’s voice cut through the lobby like a razor. "She struck an eight-month pregnant woman in the stomach with an iron rod with the explicit intent to steal a donation box. That isn't a mistake; that's attempted murder. And you stood there recording it, trying to frame your own sister to protect her ego."
"She’s our mother!" Kyle stammered, his bravado cracking. "What are we supposed to do, just let her rot in prison?"
May you like
"Yes," Ethan said coldly. "Exactly that. And if you ever come within five hundred yards of my wife, my daughter, or this hospital again, your name will be added right beside hers on the police report. Get out."
Kyle stared at Ethan, realizing for the first time in his life that there were consequences he couldn't talk or manipulate his way out of. With a bitter curse, he turned on his heel and stormed out into the parking lot.
