CHAPTER 6 – THE SPEECH

Three years later, Lily stood behind a podium at her high school's Child Safety Awareness fundraiser.

The scar beneath her hair had faded.

The fear in her eyes had disappeared.

Only quiet confidence remained.

Arthur watched proudly from the front row.

Lily looked across the audience before beginning.

"When I was little, I thought brave people never felt afraid."

She smiled softly.

"I was wrong."

"Brave people feel afraid."

"They simply decide that someone else's safety matters more than their fear."

The auditorium became silent.

"There was a day when I whispered that I needed help."

"My father heard me."

"He believed me."

"And because he believed me... I'm standing here today."

Several parents reached for their children's hands.

Lily continued.

"If someone tells you they're hurting..."

"Listen."

"If a child whispers..."

"Believe them."

When she finished, the audience rose in a standing ovation.

Arthur remained seated for a moment, wiping away tears he no longer tried to hide.
