Chapter 7 - The Long Night Turns

In the quiet hours before dawn, the heavy oak doors of the surgical wing finally pushed open. Dr. Harrison walked out, pulling off his surgical mask. He looked exhausted, but as he caught Bennett’s bloodshot, terrified eyes, a faint, reassuring smile touched the corners of his mouth.
Bennett leaped to his feet, stumbling forward. "Doctor? Tell me."
"The surgery was long and extremely delicate, Mr. Evans," Dr. Harrison said, letting out a deep breath. "We successfully removed the entire tumor. Her vital signs are stable, and she is currently resting in the recovery ward. She’s a remarkably strong little fighter."

A wave of immense relief washed over Bennett, so powerful he nearly collapsed. He grabbed the doctor’s hand, shaking it vigorously. "Thank you. Thank you with all my heart."
When Bennett was finally allowed into Cora’s room, the sight of her sleeping peacefully brought fresh tears to his eyes. The harsh lines of bitterness that had defined his face for eight years seemed to melt away. He gently pulled the hospital blanket up to her chin, kissed her forehead, and whispered, "I'm so sorry, my sweet girl. From now on, Dad will make it all up to you."
