Chapter 5 - The Hospital Corridor

The sterile, bright lights of the hospital emergency room buzzed overhead as doctors and nurses swarmed around the trauma bed. Bennett paced frantically in the waiting hallway, his hands stained with engine grease and trembling violently.
Dr. Harrison stepped through the swinging double doors, looking grave. Mr. Evans?"
Bennett rushed forward, grabbing the doctor’s coat sleeve. "How is she? Is my little girl going to be okay?"
"We managed to stabilize her vitals, but the tumor has pressed dangerously against vital organs," Dr. Harrison explained, his tone measured and serious. "The biopsy results indicate it is a localized neuroblastoma. We need to perform emergency surgery tonight. It is a high-risk procedure, Mr. Evans, but it is her only chance."

Bennett sank into a nearby plastic chair, burying his face in his calloused hands. The guilt was overwhelming. While he had forced her to kneel in the freezing dirt as punishment for a tragedy she never caused, his little girl was fighting a silent battle for her very life.
"Do whatever it takes to save her," Bennett whispered, his voice breaking. "Please. Save my daughter."
