Chapter 19 - The Crown and the Knife

The passage led beneath the conservatory and emerged in a maintenance tunnel connected to the subway. Rashad’s men searched above while the group moved through darkness toward a private broadcast studio owned by Bellwether House.

Nadia waited there.

She stood alone beside the control console, her hands empty. Adam stopped several feet away.

“You came,” he said.

“You sounded like your father.”

“That is not a compliment.”

“No.”

Maria watched them from the doorway with Elena and Victor. Samira and Leon guarded the hall.

Adam placed the ledger on the console. “I know what Hassan did.”

“Then you know why he did it.”

“Knowing is not forgiving.”

Nadia’s expression softened. “You have finally learned the difference.”

“Did you give Grant the access card?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he would kill Daniel?”

“No. I knew he would threaten him. I believed Hassan would stop the project before it reached that point.”

“And when he did not?”

“I helped Elena escape.”

“You hid the truth for twelve years.”

“I hid the witness. Rashad would have killed her.”

Maria stepped forward. “You also let my mother remain separated from me.”

Nadia bowed her head. “I did.”

“Then do not ask us to call you brave.”

“I am not asking.”

Adam connected the memory card to the broadcast system. “Can you keep the ceremony feed open?”

“For four minutes.”

“We need eight.”

“Then you need to make the truth move faster.”

The control room doors burst open. Grant Bell entered with a pistol pressed against Victor’s neck. His shoulder was wrapped in blood-soaked gauze, and his smile had disappeared.

“Step away from the console,” Grant said.

Maria moved toward her uncle.

“Stay there,” Grant warned. “I have already lost the project. I will not lose my life with it.”

Victor looked at Maria. “Do not trade the evidence.”

“You always say that after making the trade yourself,” she replied.

His face tightened with shame. “I know.”

Grant forced him toward the exit. Leon raised his weapon, but Grant fired into the ceiling.

“The ceremony begins in twenty minutes,” he said. “When the broadcast starts, Rashad will announce Adam’s arrest for treason. The kingdom will see him as a traitor before your little recording plays.”

Adam remained beside the console. “You are afraid.”

“I am realistic.”

“You built a fortune by selling fear to men who wanted power.”

“And you built a reputation by pretending power was beneath you.”

Grant pushed Victor through the doorway.

Maria followed. In the hall, she noticed a thin line of red paint on the floor, leading toward the old service elevator. Daniel had used red markings to identify safe routes in his workshop.

She stopped.

“The elevator,” she said.

Samira understood immediately. “The emergency shaft.”

They split. Adam and Nadia stayed at the console while Samira, Leon, Maria, and Elena moved through the shaft. The elevator descended two floors and opened behind Grant, who was dragging Victor toward a loading dock.

Maria stepped into the light. “Let him go.”

Grant turned the pistol toward her.

Victor lunged. The shot struck him in the side, and he collapsed. Maria rushed forward, but Grant seized her and pressed the gun against her ribs.

“Give me the keys.”

She felt the brass sleeve inside her pocket.

“You never understood my father,” she said.

“I understood him perfectly.”

“No. You thought people were parts in a machine.”

Maria shifted her weight, exactly as Daniel had taught her. She borrowed the direction of Grant’s anger, twisted beneath his arm, and drove her elbow into his wounded shoulder.

The gun fell.

Leon kicked it away. Samira restrained Grant while Elena knelt beside Victor.

Above them, the broadcast began.

Adam’s voice filled the building.

“My name is Adam Khalid. Tonight I will tell you what my family tried to bury.”
