Chapter 18 - What Daniel Left

Victor appeared at the bottom of the stairs with Elena beside him. Maria recognized her mother from the photograph, but time had changed the face she remembered. Elena’s hair was almost white, and a thin scar crossed her left cheek. She walked with a cane, yet her eyes were steady.

“Maria,” she said.

Maria crossed the chamber and stopped inches away. For twelve years, she had imagined this reunion as a dramatic embrace. Instead, she could not move.

Elena reached for her. “You look like your father when you are angry.”

“I am angry.”

“Good. Anger means you still believe the truth matters.”

Maria let her mother pull her close. The embrace was brief and awkward, filled with everything that could not be repaired by touch.

“Why did you leave me?” Maria asked.

“I did not. I was taken.”

“Victor said you died in a car accident.”

Victor lowered his head. “I was told to say that.”

“By whom?”

Elena looked at Adam. “By Hassan Khalid.”

Adam flinched but did not look away.

Elena explained that after the collapse, she had confronted Hassan with proof that Grant and Rashad had manipulated the project. Hassan wanted to expose them, but Nadia warned him that the royal council would treat the evidence as proof of his failure. Hassan ordered Elena placed in protective custody until he could control the damage.

“Protective custody became imprisonment,” Elena said. “Kareem helped me escape the palace clinic. Nadia gave me a new identity. But Rashad found the safe house and threatened Maria.”

“So you stayed away to protect me.”

“I stayed away because every attempt to reach you put a target on your back. Your father wanted to bring you with us. I refused.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I let you live.”

The answer was cruel because it contained love.

Above them, glass shattered. Rashad’s men had entered the conservatory.

Samira moved toward the stairwell. “We need to leave.”

“There is another passage,” Victor said. “Daniel built it.”

He pointed to the sealed envelope. “The third record is not the ledger. It is the testimony.”

Maria opened the final compartment of the vault. Inside was a small recording device. When she pressed the button, Daniel’s voice filled the chamber.

“I knew Hassan had agreed to a compromise with Grant. I did not know Grant planned to trigger the collapse. When I learned the truth, I divided the evidence. The ledger would expose the money. The memory card would expose the authorization. But only Elena could explain why the cover-up continued.”

The recording paused.

“If you are hearing this, the people responsible may still hold power. Do not seek revenge. Seek a public record they cannot erase. Give the evidence to people who do not need a crown to believe them.”

Maria looked at the ledger, the memory card, and her mother.

“We need to broadcast it,” she said.

Nora nodded. “I can send copies to journalists.”

“Copies can be dismissed as fabrications.”

Adam took out his phone. “Then we make it impossible to dismiss. The treaty ceremony is being streamed worldwide.”

“You can access it?”

“I am the keynote speaker.”

“Rashad will cut the feed.”

“Not if the feed comes from inside his own security network.”

Samira looked at him. “You are suggesting we use Nadia.”

“She still has access.”

A shadow crossed the broken glass above them.

Elena gripped Maria’s arm. “Nadia will help only if she believes Adam will not repeat his father’s mistake.”

“Then he should tell her himself,” Maria said.

Adam opened a hidden door behind the vault.

“We have six hours before the ceremony.”

May you like

Behind them, Rashad’s voice echoed through the stairwell.

“Sheikh Adam, surrender the evidence and your mother-in-law may live.”
