Chapter 1

The forest ranger had long stopped expecting anything from life.
After losing his family years ago, he chose silence over people. The forest became his home, and solitude became his routine. Every morning, he patrolled the same frozen paths. Every evening, he returned to a small wooden cabin at the edge of the woods—where no one waited for him.
Only the forest listened.
Only the forest stayed.
One place always worried him—the frozen lake.
Thin ice. Hidden cracks. Dangerous even for animals, let alone humans. Teenagers often came here anyway, ignoring every warning. And every time, he left angry… but still returned the next day, as if something inside him refused to let the place be forgotten.
That day, however, the forest felt wrong.
Too quiet.
Even the wind seemed afraid to move.
Then he heard it.
A sound—faint, broken… almost like a cry.
He stopped.
Listened.
And then it came again.
Closer this time.
A desperate struggle beneath the silence.
He ran toward the lake.
And froze.
In the middle of the ice water, something was fighting to survive.
A she-wolf.
Large. Heavy. Her body was shaking violently, trapped between sinking and slipping. But what made the ranger’s breath catch wasn’t just the animal—
it was her belly.
She was pregnant.
Every movement she made was weaker than the last. Her paws scraped the edge of the ice, trying to pull herself up, but the surface kept breaking beneath her weight. The water around her had already turned dark from exhaustion.
She wasn’t just drowning.
She was losing her life… and the lives inside her.
The ranger stood still for a moment.
He knew what she was.
A predator.
One wrong move… and she could turn on him in seconds.
But then she let out another sound.
Not a growl.
Not a threat.
A broken, helpless cry.
And something inside him cracked.
He stepped onto the ice.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He lay down immediately to spread his weight, crawling forward inch by inch until he was close enough. The she-wolf lifted her head, teeth half-bared out of instinct… but her strength was almost gone.
The ranger reached out.
The moment his hands touched her fur, the ice beneath them cracked loudly.
Cold water splashed onto his face.
For a second, everything could have ended right there.
But he didn’t let go.
Not even when his arms went numb.
Not even when the ice screamed under his weight.
He pulled.
Again.
And again.
Until finally—
the she-wolf collapsed onto solid ice beside him.
Alive.
Barely.
Both of them lay there in silence, gasping for air, surrounded by endless white emptiness.
The ranger stared at the sky, his body shaking from the cold.
He didn’t know it yet…
but that single moment of mercy would change everything.
May you like
Because the forest never forgets.
And neither do wolves.
