Chapter 7 - Learning to be a Father

With the darkness of the past brought to light and justice set in motion, Ethan turned his full attention to the person who mattered most: Lily.
He restructured his work life radically. He resigned from direct day-to-day operations at Cole Meridian, appointing a trusted executive team to manage affairs while he assumed the role of Chairman. For the first time in his career, Ethan was home by three in the afternoon every day.
The penthouse slowly transformed. The cold marble floors were covered with soft, warm rugs. Modern art pieces were replaced with colorful drawings that Lily created during her afternoons. A room off the main hall was converted into a brightly lit playroom filled with books, art supplies, and toys.
Yet, despite the safety and comfort, Lily had moments of deep grief.
One rainy evening, a month after her arrival, Ethan found Lily sitting by the large glass window in her bedroom, hugging her knees, looking out at the city lights.
Ethan stepped quietly into the room and sat on the floor beside her. "Hey, little one. What are you thinking about?"
Lily looked at him, her eyes glistening with tears. "I miss Mom. Sometimes I forget what her voice sounds like when I go to sleep."
Ethan’s heart ached for her. He pulled her gently into his lap, wrapping his arms around her warm frame. "I miss her too, Lily. Every single day."
"Did she really love the sunflowers like in the picture?" Lily asked, wiping a tear with her sleeve.
"She loved them more than anything," Ethan said softly, reminiscing. "She said sunflowers were special because no matter how cloudy the day was, they always searched for the light. She was just like that. Even when things were hard, she always found the light."
Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He opened it to reveal a delicate gold necklace with a small, beautifully detailed sunflower pendant. Inside the center of the sunflower was a tiny, clear diamond that caught the warm light of the room.
"I had this made for you," Ethan whispered, fastening the necklace gently around her neck. "Whenever you feel lonely or miss your mom, hold this. Remember that she is always watching over you, and so am I."

Lily held the pendant in her small palm, looking at it with awe. She buried her face in Ethan's neck, wrapping her arms tightly around his shoulders. "Thank you, Dad."
Ethan held her close, rocking her gently in the quiet room, feeling a profound sense of peace wash over him. He knew he could never replace the years they had lost, nor could he bring Rachel back. But he could honor her memory by giving Lily a life filled with unconditional love, warmth, and joy.
