Chapter 4 - The Whispers of Doubt

By morning, the news of Ethan Cole leaving his high-stakes acquisition dinner had already caused ripples in the financial district. But when Ethan instructed his legal team to immediately initiate a formal paternity test and prepare custody papers, the inner circle of Cole Meridian erupted in hushed panic.

In the legal world and high society, a sudden heiress appearing out of nowhere was a liability, a potential scam, or a strategic attack designed to weaken Ethan's hold on his company.

Arthur Vance, Ethan's senior counsel and a family advisor for over two decades, arrived at the penthouse at eight in the morning, carrying a thick leather briefcase. He found Ethan sitting at the dining table, helping Lily pour milk into a bowl of cereal. The sight was so foreign to Arthur that he stopped in his tracks near the foyer.

"Ethan," Arthur said gravely, stepping forward once Lily was absorbed in a cartoon on the television in the adjacent room. "We need to speak. Privately."

Ethan walked over to his study, gesturing for Arthur to follow. He closed the heavy oak door. "Make it brief, Arthur. I have doctors and pediatric specialists arriving at ten."

"Ethan, you must regain your senses," Arthur urged, setting his briefcase on the desk. "A child shows up on the street with an old photograph, claiming to be your long-lost daughter? Do you realize how vulnerable you are right now? Cole Meridian is in the middle of a delicate merger. If the board suspects you are being compromised by an extortion attempt or an illegitimate claim, they could vote to restructure leadership."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "Watch your tongue, Arthur. She is Rachel’s child."

"Rachel Bennett disappeared six years ago!" Arthur countered. "You haven't seen her since. You don't know who she was with, what her situation was, or who sent this child to you. We need to handle this discreetly. Put the child in a reputable foster facility while we run DNA tests and investigate her background thoroughly. If she isn't yours—"

"She is mine," Ethan cut in, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I don't need a lab test to look into my daughter's eyes and see her mother. But we will do the test. Not because I doubt her, but because I want every legal door slammed shut so no one—not the state, not the board, and certainly not you—can ever touch her."

Arthur sighed, realizing the iron resolve in his client's eyes. "The DNA test results will take three days for an expedited rush. Until then, keep her out of the press. If the media gets wind of a billionaire adopting a street child overnight, the tabloids will feast on it."

"I don't care about the press, Arthur," Ethan said coldly. "Tell the board that if anyone questions my capacity to lead while I settle my personal family affairs, I will personally buy out their shares and remove them from their seats."

Later that afternoon, a medical team discreetly visited the penthouse to collect cheek swabs for the DNA test. Lily was brave, holding Ethan's hand tightly throughout the quick procedure. Afterwards, Ethan took her to a private clothing boutique he had leased out for the afternoon.

Watching her try on warm coats, soft sweaters, and sturdy shoes, Ethan felt a deep, unfamiliar sense of fulfillment. For years, his success had been measured in profit margins and stock valuations. Now, it was measured by the bright smile on a little girl's face when she tried on a bright pink winter hat.

Yet, deep down, a shadow lingering in Ethan's mind troubled him. Why hadn't Rachel come to him earlier? Why had she struggled in poverty alone instead of reaching out when she fell ill? There was a piece of the puzzle missing—a piece that someone had kept hidden from him.
