Chapter 8

Emily screamed Lily’s name before she even reached the school.

Arthur drove.

Lopez followed with police.

Daniel left the hospital against medical advice.

No one could stop him.

By the time they arrived, the school was locked down.

Teachers stood in hallways.

Parents gathered outside.

Emily ran through the entrance.

“Lily!”

The principal rushed toward her.

“I am so sorry.”

“Where is my daughter?”

“We’re checking every room.”

“You let Brian take her?”

“No.”

“Then where is she?”

The principal’s voice shook.

“He arrived at 10:12.”

“With who?”

“Alone.”

“What happened?”

“He showed the visitation order. Our secretary called the number on the paperwork to verify it.”

Rachel stepped forward.

“What number?”

The principal handed her a copy.

Rachel looked at it.

“That isn’t the court clerk’s number.”

Emily went cold.

“Fake.”

Rachel nodded.

“Modified paperwork.”

Lopez was already giving orders.

Security cameras were pulled.

The footage showed Brian entering.

Seven minutes later, Lily’s teacher brought her to the front office.

Lily did not look happy.

She stood several feet from Brian.

Then a fire alarm sounded.

Everyone evacuated.

The camera showed confusion.

Children moving toward exits.

Teachers counting heads.

Brian disappeared from frame.

So did Lily.

Emily covered her mouth.

“Find another camera.”

They switched views.

Parking lot.

Playground.

South exit.

Nothing.

Then Daniel pointed.

“There.”

A black SUV waited across the street.

The rear door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Vanessa.

Arthur whispered, “No.”

The footage showed Vanessa crossing toward the school as people evacuated.

Then the camera froze behind a passing bus.

When the view cleared, Vanessa was gone.

The SUV remained.

Three minutes later, it drove away.

Emily turned toward Lopez.

“They have her.”

Lopez was already calling state police.

An Amber Alert went out.

Highways were notified.

Airports received photographs.

Emily stood in the principal’s office shaking.

Arthur touched her shoulder.

She pushed his hand away.

Not because she blamed him.

Because if anyone touched her, she might collapse.

Daniel stood near the wall.

His face was white.

“This is my fault.”

Emily turned slowly.

“Yes.”

Arthur said, “Emily.”

“No.”

She looked at Daniel.

“He hid me for money.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“He taught Vanessa how to use stolen identities and fake payments.”

“I know.”

“And now my daughter is gone.”

Daniel whispered, “I know.”

Emily stepped closer.

“If Lily gets hurt, I will never forgive you.”

Daniel looked up.

Tears filled his eyes.

“I won’t forgive myself either.”

“Good.”

Lopez entered.

“We found the SUV.”

Emily’s heart jumped.

“Where?”

“Abandoned near Interstate 87.”

“Lily?”

“No.”

Emily staggered.

Arthur caught her despite her resistance.

Lopez continued.

“But we found a phone inside.”

“Whose?”

“Vanessa’s burner phone.”

Daniel frowned.

“She wouldn’t leave that accidentally.”

“Exactly.”

Lopez looked at him.

“We need every place she might go.”

Daniel began listing properties.

A lake house.

A condo.

Company warehouses.

A cabin.

Hotels.

Emily listened.

Then she suddenly remembered Vanessa’s words.

If you want to protect your daughter, leave the Bennett family before they destroy you.

“She thinks she’s smarter than us.”

Everyone looked at Emily.

“What?” Lopez asked.

“Vanessa likes people to know she planned things.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“She does.”

“She told me Daniel wasn’t paying Brian because she wanted credit for it.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

Emily continued.

“She left the phone because she wants us looking at places connected to her.”

Lopez frowned.

“So where would she go?”

“Somewhere connected to Brian.”

They searched Brian’s records.

Old addresses.

Friends.

Relatives.

A hunting property owned by his cousin.

A motel where he once worked.

Then Rachel found something.

“His mother.”

Emily looked up.

“Brian’s mother died.”

“Yes. Four years ago.”

Rachel turned her laptop.

“But her house never sold.”

Emily stared.

She remembered it.

A small farmhouse outside Kingston.

Brian had hated it.

After his mother died, foreclosure proceedings began but stopped.

Taxes were being paid by an LLC.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Who owns the LLC?”

Rachel searched.

The answer made him swear.

One of Vanessa’s shell companies.

Police moved.

Emily tried going with them.

Lopez refused.

“You stay here.”

“My child is there.”

“We don’t know that.”

“She’s there.”

“Emily.”

“I lost thirty-one years because adults decided what was best without me.”

Lopez held her gaze.

“This isn’t about deciding for you. This is about not giving Brian another hostage.”

That stopped her.

Arthur said, “Stay with me.”

Emily hated it.

But she stayed.

Forty-three minutes later, Lopez called.

Emily answered before the first ring finished.

“Did you find her?”

“We found Brian.”

“And Lily?”

“No.”

Emily nearly screamed.

“Where is she?”

“Brian was alone.”

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

“What did he say?”

Lopez hesitated.

“He says Vanessa took Lily.”

Emily’s knees weakened.

“Where?”

“He claims he doesn’t know.”

Daniel grabbed the phone.

“He knows.”

Lopez heard.

“We’re questioning him.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“I know Vanessa.”

Emily stared.

“She won’t hurt Lily.”

“You don’t know that.”

“She wants money.”

“That doesn’t make me feel better.”

“Listen.”

Daniel’s mind was moving quickly now.

“If she hurts Lily, she loses access to the trust.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Unless Emily dies.”

The room became silent.

Emily slowly turned.

Daniel’s face changed.

Arthur looked sick.

Rachel spoke carefully.

“The trust passes to Lily if Emily dies.”

Emily’s breath became shallow.

“And if Brian has custody…”

Rachel nodded.

“He could act as Lily’s natural guardian, subject to court oversight.”

Daniel finished.

“And Vanessa planned to become trustee.”

Emily stared at them.

“So I’m the obstacle.”

“No,” Arthur said.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Yes.”

Arthur snapped, “Daniel.”

“She needs the truth.”

Emily grabbed her coat.

“Then we find Lily before Vanessa decides to remove the obstacle.”

Lopez called again.

Brian had finally talked.

Vanessa had offered him five million dollars.

He claimed the plan was never supposed to involve kidnapping.

He was supposed to pressure Emily.

Win temporary custody.

Then sign financial documents.

But Vanessa panicked when Daniel discovered the stolen company money.

She told Brian they needed leverage.

Lily became that leverage.

“Where is she?” Emily demanded.

Brian said Vanessa had mentioned a cabin.

Daniel shook his head.

“She knows police know about the family cabin.”

Brian gave another detail.

Vanessa kept repeating one phrase.

No cameras at the river.

Emily frowned.

Arthur understood.

“The old Bennett workshop.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

Arthur’s face went white.

“My father owned a workshop near the Hudson.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That was demolished.”

“No.”

Arthur looked at Emily.

“I thought it was.”

Rachel searched property records.

The land had been sold twenty years earlier.

Then transferred repeatedly.

The current owner was a holding company.

Daniel recognized the name.

Vanessa.

Police surrounded the property before sunset.

Emily refused to remain behind this time.

She stayed two hundred yards away inside an unmarked car with Arthur.

Daniel was with Lopez.

The workshop looked abandoned.

One light burned inside.

Emily stared at it.

“That’s my daughter.”

Arthur held her hand.

She let him.

Officers moved through the trees.

Then everything happened quickly.

A door opened.

Vanessa stepped outside.

She held Lily by the shoulders.

Emily stopped breathing.

Lily was alive.

Terrified.

But alive.

“Mom!”

Emily reached for the car door.

Arthur stopped her.

“Wait.”

Vanessa shouted toward police.

“No one comes closer!”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Vanessa.”

She laughed.

“You.”

“Let Lily go.”

“You chose them.”

Daniel’s face twisted.

“What?”

“You chose your father.”

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“You chose your sister.”

Emily stared.

This was not only about money.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“I spent twenty years cleaning up your secrets.”

Daniel moved one step closer.

“You helped create them.”

“I protected you!”

“You stole six million dollars.”

“I earned more than that saving this family from you.”

Lily began crying.

Emily could not bear it.

She opened the car door.

“Emily!” Arthur shouted.

She stepped out.

“Vanessa!”

Every officer turned.

Vanessa looked toward her.

Emily walked closer.

Lopez shouted, “Stop!”

Emily stopped at the police line.

“Let my daughter come to me.”

Vanessa gripped Lily tighter.

“You ruined everything.”

Emily stared at her.

“I was selling a necklace for antibiotics a week ago.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You walked into that store and suddenly I lost my husband.”

“No.”

Emily shook her head.

“You lost him nineteen years ago when he decided lying was easier than facing what he did.”

Daniel looked down.

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“You get half the company.”

“I don’t want it.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Forty-eight million dollars?”

“I wanted eight dollars.”

Vanessa froze.

Emily’s voice cracked.

“That was my entire problem.”

She pointed toward Lily.

“My daughter was sick, and I needed eight dollars.”

Tears ran down her face.

“I did not ask for your house.”

Another step.

“I did not ask for your husband.”

Another.

“I did not ask for a company.”

Vanessa stared.

“I want my little girl.”

Lily sobbed.

“Mom.”

Emily held out her arms.

“Come here, baby.”

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Something in her face shifted.

Then Daniel shouted.

“Vanessa, look at me.”

She did.

“I’m the one you hate.”

Daniel walked forward.

Lopez warned him.

He ignored her.

“I lied.”

Daniel’s voice shook.

“I hid Eleanor.”

Another step.

“I used you to hide money.”

Another.

“I made our marriage a house built on secrets.”

Vanessa began crying.

“I protected you.”

“I know.”

“You would be nothing without me.”

“Maybe.”

“You owe me.”

Daniel nodded.

“I do.”

Vanessa stared.

Daniel held out his hands.

“Take me.”

Everyone froze.

“Let Lily go and take me.”

Emily’s heart stopped.

Vanessa stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“You don’t want an eight-year-old.”

Lily cried harder.

“You want leverage.”

He opened his arms.

“I’m better leverage.”

Vanessa’s grip loosened.

Emily saw it.

So did Lily.

Lily suddenly ducked.

She tore free.

“Mom!”

Vanessa grabbed for her.

Missed.

Lily ran.

Emily sprinted across the grass.

Police shouted.

She didn’t hear them.

Lily crashed into her arms.

Emily fell to her knees.

She held her daughter so tightly Lily squeaked.

“I’ve got you.”

Emily kissed her hair.

“I’ve got you.”

Behind them, police surrounded Vanessa.

Daniel stood frozen.

Vanessa did not fight.

She simply stared at him as officers placed her in handcuffs.

“You chose them.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“No.”

He looked at Emily holding Lily.

“For once, I chose what I should have chosen a long time ago.”

Arthur reached them.

He knelt beside Emily and Lily.

All three cried.

For several minutes, nothing else mattered.

Not money.

Not inheritance.

Not old lies.

Lily was alive.

Later that night, doctors examined her.

She was physically unharmed.

Brian was arrested on kidnapping and fraud-related charges.

Vanessa faced far more.

Emily sat beside Lily’s hospital bed.

Arthur slept in a chair.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

Emily looked at him.

He did not enter.

“Thank you,” she said.

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“For what?”

“For helping her.”

He nodded.

Then he turned to leave.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

Emily swallowed.

“This doesn’t fix us.”

“I know.”

“I’m still angry.”

“You should be.”

“I may never trust you.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

Emily looked at her sleeping daughter.

“But she came home.”

Daniel wiped his eyes.

“Yes.”

May you like

Emily looked at him.

“And maybe that’s where we start.”
