Chapter 6

Arthur stared at Vanessa.

“What are you implying?”

Vanessa held the photograph between two fingers.

“I’m not implying anything.”

“Then say it.”

Emily watched them both.

Vanessa’s calmness felt deliberate.

Too deliberate.

“Evelyn knew Marianne was unstable.”

Arthur’s face tightened.

“That isn’t a secret.”

“She knew Marianne had threatened her.”

Emily looked at Arthur.

He hesitated.

Vanessa noticed.

“You didn’t tell her.”

Arthur’s voice became low.

“This is not your story to tell.”

“It became my story when Daniel spent twenty years terrified someone would find out.”

Emily turned toward Arthur.

“What threat?”

Arthur looked trapped.

Vanessa answered.

“Marianne told Evelyn that if she cut her off financially, she would take something Evelyn loved.”

Emily’s stomach twisted.

“Did my mother report it?”

“No,” Arthur said.

“Why?”

“She didn’t think Marianne meant it.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“That decision worked out well.”

Arthur flinched.

Vanessa continued.

“Daniel heard the threat too.”

Emily’s gaze sharpened.

“He knew Marianne might take me?”

“He was thirteen.”

Arthur stepped in.

“He was a child.”

“He was old enough to remember.”

Vanessa looked directly at Emily.

“And old enough to blame himself.”

Emily frowned.

“For what?”

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“The side gate.”

Arthur went pale.

“Stop.”

Emily turned.

“What side gate?”

Arthur looked at the floor.

Vanessa answered.

“The gate Eleanor used when she walked toward the road.”

Emily could feel another piece of her old life opening.

“The gate was supposed to be locked,” Arthur said.

“Daniel left it open.”

Emily stared.

Arthur spoke quickly.

“He didn’t know. He was thirteen. He had friends over. Someone used the gate.”

“And I walked out?”

“Yes.”

“Marianne saw me.”

Arthur nodded.

Emily thought of Daniel.

The bitterness.

The fear.

The way he had looked at her.

Nineteen years ago, he had found proof that the little sister whose disappearance he blamed himself for was alive.

And still he had hidden her.

Vanessa leaned back.

“Daniel told me everything after we married.”

Arthur looked disgusted.

“He trusted you.”

Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.

“That was his mistake?”

“No. Paying Marianne was.”

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“You still don’t understand your son.”

Arthur said nothing.

“He found Emily when he was twenty-five,” Vanessa continued. “He went to that apartment planning to bring her home.”

Emily remembered Mara’s letter.

“That’s what Mara wrote.”

“He watched you through a coffee shop window first.”

Emily froze.

Vanessa looked at her.

“You were laughing with friends. You had a job. You were applying to college.”

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“How do you know?”

“Daniel told me.”

“He still should have told me the truth.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa surprised her.

“He should have.”

Arthur frowned.

“Then why are you defending him?”

“I’m not.”

Vanessa’s face became hard.

“I’m explaining why he was vulnerable enough for Marianne to manipulate him.”

Emily laughed.

“He paid her.”

“At first because she threatened to disappear with you again.”

Emily stopped.

That was not in the confession.

Vanessa continued.

“Marianne told him if he involved Arthur or police, she would take you across the country. Maybe outside it.”

Arthur looked furious.

“He should have called me.”

“He was twenty-five and still waking up from nightmares about the gate.”

Arthur looked away.

Vanessa said, “Then Marianne told him something else.”

Emily waited.

“That the trust would destroy the family if Eleanor returned.”

Arthur’s expression darkened.

“So eventually he chose money.”

“Eventually he chose control.”

Emily leaned forward.

“What’s the difference?”

“Money buys things. Control keeps your world from changing.”

Vanessa looked toward the courthouse.

“Daniel has spent his entire life controlling everything because one open gate destroyed his childhood.”

Emily did not forgive him.

But for the first time, she understood part of him.

Then she remembered Lily.

“You still haven’t explained why you’re paying Brian.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I need you to stay away from Daniel.”

Emily stared.

“What?”

“He’s losing control.”

“So you’re trying to take my child?”

“I’m trying to make you leave.”

Arthur slammed his hand against the seat.

“That is enough.”

Vanessa did not move.

“I knew Brian would surface once the news broke.”

“So you hired him?”

“I contacted his attorney.”

Emily’s hands curled into fists.

“You used my daughter.”

Vanessa’s voice remained calm.

“I created pressure.”

“You created terror.”

Rachel opened the door.

“We’re done.”

Vanessa stepped out.

Emily followed.

“Withdraw the money.”

Vanessa looked back.

“No.”

Emily walked closer.

“If Brian takes one more step toward my daughter because of you, I will make sure every reporter outside knows exactly what you did.”

Vanessa smiled.

“You think public shame scares me?”

“No.”

Emily lowered her voice.

“But losing Daniel’s trust might.”

For the first time, Vanessa’s expression flickered.

Emily saw it.

There was more happening inside Daniel’s marriage than anyone knew.

That evening, Emily went to Mara’s storage unit alone.

Lopez had already cataloged the evidence.

But Emily needed something personal.

Not police evidence.

Not trust documents.

She wanted photographs.

Proof that some part of the life she remembered had been real.

She found a box labeled EM.

Inside were school certificates.

Birthday cards.

Lily’s newborn bracelet.

Then, at the bottom, she found an old cassette recorder.

Beside it were three tapes.

One was labeled FOR EMILY.

Her hands shook.

The storage office had an old player.

The manager found batteries.

Emily sat alone in the corner.

She pressed play.

Static filled the speaker.

Then Mara’s voice.

Emily nearly dropped the recorder.

“Emily.”

She closed her eyes.

Mara sounded tired.

Older.

“If you found the letter, you probably hate me.”

Emily began crying immediately.

“I deserve that.”

The tape crackled.

“I told myself I saved you from a cold family. I told myself Evelyn cared more about reputation than people. I told myself Arthur loved his business more than his children.”

Emily wiped her face.

“Some of that was true. Most of it was how I excused what I did.”

Then Mara said something that changed everything again.

“But Daniel was not the only person who found us.”

Emily sat straighter.

“Your mother did too.”

She froze.

Evelyn.

Biological mother.

Found them.

“When you were sixteen, Evelyn saw you at a train station.”

Emily stopped breathing.

“She followed us.”

A memory burst through Emily’s mind.

A woman.

Gray coat.

Crying.

Mara gripping Emily’s arm.

Hurrying her into a taxi.

Emily had thought the woman was asking for money.

Mara’s voice continued.

“Evelyn came to my apartment that night.”

Emily gripped the recorder.

“She begged me to give you back.”

Emily whispered, “No.”

“I told her you believed I was your mother.”

Mara’s voice broke.

“I told her exposing the truth would destroy you.”

Emily started shaking.

“Evelyn asked to see you once.”

The tape crackled.

“I said no.”

Emily covered her face.

“But she came back.”

Mara inhaled.

“And then Daniel arrived.”

Emily’s head snapped up.

“Daniel knew she found us.”

Her voice echoed through the empty storage office.

The tape continued.

“They fought.”

Emily listened in horror.

Evelyn demanded they call Arthur.

Daniel begged her to wait.

He said Arthur had suffered a heart attack the previous year.

He said the company was unstable.

He said they needed a plan.

Evelyn accused him of caring about the trust.

Daniel denied it.

Then Mara dropped the worst truth.

“Evelyn agreed to wait forty-eight hours.”

Emily’s entire body went cold.

“She went home.”

Mara’s voice trembled.

“And Daniel never brought her back.”

Emily stood.

“No.”

“Three days later, he came alone.”

Mara said Daniel told her Evelyn had changed her mind.

That she believed Emily should be left alone.

Emily whispered, “She wouldn’t.”

“I believed him because I wanted to.”

Mara’s voice cracked.

“I found out years later he lied.”

The tape ended.

Emily stared at the machine.

She replayed the last sentence.

I found out years later he lied.

Again.

Again.

Again.

She called Lopez.

Then Arthur.

No one could reach Daniel.

His phone was off.

At the Bennett house, Arthur stood beside Evelyn’s photograph.

“She found you.”

Emily nodded.

Arthur’s face crumpled.

“She never told me.”

“Because Daniel asked her to wait.”

Arthur looked toward the stairs.

The house suddenly seemed haunted by choices.

“My wife died believing…”

He stopped.

Emily waited.

Arthur wiped his eyes.

“She died believing I would blame her.”

“What?”

Arthur sat.

“After you disappeared, we became different people.”

Emily listened.

“I blamed myself for working too much. Evelyn blamed herself for Marianne. Daniel blamed himself for the gate.”

Arthur looked around.

“We stopped being a family and became three people serving the same sentence.”

Emily’s anger softened slightly.

“She probably thought she could fix it before telling you.”

Arthur nodded.

“That sounds like Evelyn.”

Detective Lopez arrived.

She had listened to the copied recording.

“We need Daniel.”

Arthur said, “He won’t answer.”

Lopez’s phone rang.

She stepped away.

Seconds later, she turned.

“His car was found.”

Arthur stood.

“Where?”

“At the company warehouse.”

“Is he there?”

“No.”

“Then where is he?”

Lopez looked toward Emily.

“We don’t know.”

A second call came.

Lopez answered.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

Arthur demanded.

Lopez lowered the phone.

“The warehouse security system recorded Daniel entering at 11:14 last night.”

“And?”

“He wasn’t alone.”

Emily felt dread.

“Who was with him?”

Lopez hesitated.

“Brian Wells.”

Emily went cold.

“My ex?”

Lopez nodded.

Arthur stared.

Then Lopez added the part that made Emily grab the back of a chair.

“At 11:48, Daniel left.”

Emily exhaled.

“Then he’s fine.”

Lopez did not answer.

“Maria?”

“The person who left was wearing Daniel’s coat.”

Arthur’s face changed.

“What are you saying?”

Lopez met his eyes.

“We haven’t confirmed it was Daniel.”

Emily whispered, “Then who was it?”

May you like

Lopez looked at her.

“And where is Brian?”
