Chapter 9 - The Party Eleanor Never Expected to AttendFive years after the penthouse humiliation, Sterling International held its eightieth anniversary celebration.

Same tower.

Same terrace.

Different atmosphere.

Fewer celebrities.

More employees.

Store managers.

Designers.

Warehouse supervisors.

Longtime sales staff.

Elena had almost refused to use the penthouse.

Leo convinced her.

“Why should Grandma's bad memory own the whole room?”

He was ten.

Increasingly dangerous with logic.

Eleanor attended.

Her home-confinement period had ended.

She arrived quietly.

No press entrance.

No special announcement.

She stood near the same marble floor where she once shoved Elena and Leo.

For several minutes she said nothing.

Then Leo approached.

“You remember?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Every day.”

Leo looked at the floor.

“I don't remember it every day.”

That sentence destroyed her more effectively than anger.

He had moved forward.

She was the one still trapped there.

Eleanor smiled weakly.

“That's good.”

Leo handed her a glass of sparkling water.

“I forgive you.”

She nearly dropped it.

Elena watched from a distance.

Eleanor whispered:

“You do?”

Leo nodded.

“But Mom says forgiveness doesn't mean pretending.”

Eleanor glanced toward Elena.

“Your mother says many difficult things.”

Leo smiled.

“She does.”

Then:

“You can come to my soccer game Saturday.”

Eleanor began crying.

Leo immediately became uncomfortable.

“Please don't make it weird.”

Elena laughed.

For the first time in years, Eleanor laughed too.

Healing did not erase accountability.

It simply stopped punishment from becoming the only relationship left.
