She hated it.
Every interview asked about revenge.
“Did you plan the party shutdown?”
No.
“Did you enjoy humiliating Eleanor?”
No.
“Do you intend to remove the Sterling family permanently?”
Wrong question.
Elena told the board:
“The problem was never the surname.”
She pointed toward the governance chart.
“The problem was unchecked control.”
She proposed eliminating automatic family leadership.
Independent directors.
Employee representation.
External trust administration.
Whistleblower protection.
Term limits.
Victor's allies opposed everything.
One director said:
“Arthur built this as a family business.”
Elena answered:
“And his family nearly destroyed it.”
The reforms passed.
Barely.
Then another scandal surfaced.
Daniel's stolen money was not only company money.
Some came from employee pension funds.
Elena immediately created a restitution reserve.
The company would reimburse every verified loss before paying family distributions.
Eleanor called from her attorney's office.
“You're giving away our inheritance.”
Elena laughed.
“No.”
She looked at the pension report.
“I'm returning other people's money.”
Eleanor whispered:
“You enjoy punishing me.”
Elena became quiet.
“You still think you're the center of this.”
That silenced her.
Leo struggled more quietly.
He stopped asking about Grandma.
Stopped wanting to attend family events.
One night he asked:
“Did Grandma push Daddy too?”
Elena froze.
“What?”
“She pushed us.”
He looked at her.
“Did she push Daddy?”
Children build their own logic from fragments.
Elena sat beside him.
“No.”
“Then why did Daddy die?”
She had prepared many versions of the truth.
None felt right.
“Someone made a dangerous choice because Daddy was trying to stop something wrong.”
“Uncle Victor?”
Elena closed her eyes.
He had heard adults.
Of course.
“Yes.”
“Did Grandma know?”
“Some of it.”
“Did she love Daddy?”
Elena's throat tightened.
“Yes.”
Leo looked confused.
“Then why didn't she help him?”
There it was.
The question billion-dollar lawyers could not simplify.
“Sometimes people love someone and still make terrible choices because they're afraid.”
Leo frowned.
“That's stupid.”
Elena laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
“Are you afraid?”
“All the time.”
“Do you do bad things?”
“Sometimes I make mistakes.”
He thought.
“Don't push me.”
