Chapter 10 - The Warm Embrace of Tomorrow

The first snowfall of the winter season arrived on a Friday evening in December, dusting the streets of Columbus in a pristine, glittering white blanket. Inside our apartment, the radiator hissed softly, and the scent of cinnamon rolls baking in the oven filled every corner of the room.
There was a knock at the door—a gentle, familiar rap.
I glanced at the Ring camera monitor by the kitchen. It was Rachel and her husband, carrying a stack of board games and a box of homemade hot chocolate mix for our weekly family movie night. Behind them, my phone sat completely silent, devoid of toxic family group chats, guilt trips, or demands for compliance.
I opened the door wide, letting the cold winter air brush past us as Rachel stepped inside, shaking snowflakes out of her hair and laughing as Lily ran over to greet her with a enthusiastic hug.
“It’s freezing out there!” Rachel exclaimed, rubbing her hands together before smiling warmly down at Lily. “Are you ready to lose at Mario Kart tonight, kiddo?”
“I’m going to win!” Lily declared proudly, holding her brown bear under one arm as she skipped back toward the living room.

I stood in the doorway for a brief moment, looking out into the brightly lit hallway of our building, then back inside at the warm, safe sanctuary we had built together. We didn't have a traditional family tree anymore; we had something much stronger—a family forged not by blood or obligation, but by choice, protection, and unconditional love.
Closing the heavy wooden door behind us, I locked the deadbolt with a satisfying click, turned around, and joined my daughter in the living room, ready for a future that belonged entirely to us.
