Chapter 6 - Deborah’s Version of MotherhoodDeborah visited my parents before they had even returned from their cruise.

She called them repeatedly.
Left voicemails.
Tried to get ahead of the story.
Her version:
I had experienced unexpected labor.
Travis had briefly stepped out.
Mrs. Carter panicked.
The hospital overreacted.
Police were turning a family misunderstanding into something sinister.
Unfortunately for Deborah—
my father saved every voicemail.
When my parents returned, my mother called her.
One conversation.
Speakerphone.
Recorded with advice from counsel where lawful.
My mother asked:
“Did Hannah tell you she needed the hospital?”
Deborah answered:
“She believed she did.”
“Did she ask Travis to take her?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell him to take you shopping instead?”
Pause.
“It sounds terrible when you phrase it like that.”
My mother said:
“How else would you phrase it?”
Deborah hung up.
My parents arrived at the hospital that evening.
Mom saw Emma first.
Tiny.
Sleeping inside the incubator.
Then Ethan.
She cried without sound.
Dad stood behind her with both hands covering his face.
I suddenly became furious.
Not with them.
At the fact that my babies had nearly lost these people because another family believed my emergency could wait.
Dad kissed my forehead.
“You never go back to that house unless you want to.”
“I don’t.”
“Good.”
My parents did not tell me to forgive Travis.
Did not talk about children needing both parents.
Did not mention appearances.
They asked:
May you like
“What do you need?”
There was a difference.
