Chapter 3 - The Midnight Raid

The house was dark when Sarah’s husband dropped me off two blocks down the street at 1:30 a.m. The cool night air felt heavy, carrying the scent of damp pavement and distant woodsmoke. I wore dark clothing and kept my phone on silent, clutching a spare set of house keys in my pocket. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, but I forced my breathing to stay slow and steady.
I didn't enter through the front door. Instead, I crept around the back side of the house, navigating through the overgrown hydrangea bushes near the patio. I used my key to unlock the back door, wincing at the soft click of the deadbolt sliding back.
The house smelled of familiar things—cinnamon tea, Mark’s cologne, the laundry detergent I always bought—but now those scents felt sour and invasive. I moved quietly down the hallway, avoiding the floorboards I knew would squeak.
I sneaked into the home office first. The room was cluttered; papers were scattered across Mark’s desk, and an empty bottle of bourbon sat beside his laptop. I opened the bottom drawer of my desk, my fingers trembling as I reached behind a stack of medical journals to pull out the small black notebook. It was still there. I opened it to the page labeled Home Security & Wi-Fi and snapped a clear photo of the master administrator credentials with my phone.
Before leaving the room, I glanced at Mark’s desk. A manila folder caught my eye. Written across the front in his neat handwriting was a single word: Custody.
My stomach turned. I pulled the folder open and scanned the pages inside under the dim light of my phone screen. It was a draft prepared by a low-end divorce attorney. Mark had already begun consulting a lawyer weeks before I caught him. In the documents, he claimed that my night shifts as a nurse made me an "absentee mother," arguing that he was the primary caregiver for Leo and requesting full physical custody along with child support and spousal alimony.
He had planned this. He was building a case to strip me of my son while using my own hard-earned income to fund his affair with my sister.
A sudden creak upstairs froze me in place.
I held my breath, listening intently. Heavy footsteps moved across the master bedroom floor, followed by the sound of a door opening. I shoved the folder back onto the desk, grabbed the notebook, and slipped out of the office, ducking into the dark alcove beneath the stairs.
Through the wooden balusters, I saw a light switch on in the kitchen. Mark walked into view wearing a faded gray t-shirt and sweatpants. He looked exhausted, his hair disheveled, but there was a sharp, bitter edge to his movements. He opened the refrigerator, pulled out a pitcher of water, and drank directly from it.
Then, his phone chimed. He picked it up and tapped the screen, speaking aloud in a hushed, irritated whisper.
"I told you not to text me this late, Clara," he snapped into the phone. "No, she hasn't come back. She's staying with some lawyer friend... I don't care if you feel guilty! You need to keep your mouth shut. If you tell her attorney anything about the previous months, you ruin this for both of us. Remember who paid off your credit card debt last month."
I pulled out my phone, activated the audio recording app, and held it out from behind the shadow of the staircase.
"She has no proof of how long it's been going on," Mark continued, his tone cold and manipulative. "As far as the court is concerned, it was a one-time mistake, and she abandoned the marital home in an emotional fit. Just stick to the story. Tell them you came over that night because you were worried about my mental state. If you break script now, Clara, I swear to God I’ll make sure you don't see a dime."
He hung up the phone with a harsh sigh, tossed it onto the counter, and ran his hands over his face. He stood there for another minute before switching off the kitchen light and walking back upstairs.
I waited five agonizing minutes until the house was completely silent again. Then, I slipped out through the back door, running down the dark driveway until I reached the safety of Sarah’s waiting car.
"Did you get it?" Sarah asked as soon as I pulled the passenger door shut.
May you like
"I got the master security login," I whispered, holding up my phone with a hand that wouldn't stop shaking. "And I recorded him threatening Clara to lie to the court. He’s been planning to take Leo from me, Sarah. He’s trying to paint me as an unfit mother."
Sarah stared at the illuminated screen of my phone, her expression darkening. "He just played right into our hands. With this recording and the security portal access, we aren't just defending you, Elena. We're going to dismantle him."
