Chapter 4 - The Investigation

The morning light crept through the window of PICU Room 402, throwing a dull grey wash over the silver monitors. Noah hadn't moved. His heart rate remained unstable, bouncing erratically whenever the nurses tried to adjust his medication.

By 8:00 AM, David Ross arrived, wearing a sharp grey suit and carrying a leather briefcase. Beside him was Detective Marcus Vance from the city police department’s Special Victims Unit, along with a representative from Child Protective Services, a woman named Ms. Alvarez.

"Michael, Emily," David said, shaking our hands firmly. "Tell Detective Vance and Ms. Alvarez everything from the beginning. Don't leave out a single detail."

For the next forty-five minutes, Emily and I recounted the entire nightmare. We handed over our phones, showing the timeline of texts and calls. I showed Detective Vance the panicked text messages sent between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM that Sarah had deliberately ignored.

"You mentioned Noah had an emergency phone in his backpack?" Detective Vance asked, taking detailed notes on a yellow notepad.

"Yes. A small basic phone with GPS tracking," I explained. "Noah told us before he lost consciousness that Sarah pulled his backpack away, took the phone, dropped it on the floor, and locked him down there. When I found him, the screen was smashed."

"That moves this from negligence to active criminal endangerment and unlawful restraint," Detective Vance said grimly. "If she intentionally removed his means of seeking medical help or contacting his parents while locking him in an unheated space, we are looking at severe felony charges."

Ms. Alvarez looked at Noah's silent, tubed body on the bed, her face hardening. "I am opening an immediate investigation into Sarah's home environment. If she is capable of doing this to her nephew, her own child, Matthew, may be in an unsafe situation or subject to severe emotional abuse."

"Good," Emily said, her eyes hollow, dark circles ringed around her swollen eyelids. "Destroy her."

At 10:30 AM, Detective Vance left to obtain a search warrant for Sarah's home and an arrest warrant for her questioning.

Meanwhile, downstairs in the main hospital lobby, a storm was brewing.

My mother, Eleanor, and my father, Arthur, arrived. With them was Sarah's husband, Greg. Greg was a corporate accountant, a man who always cared deeply about appearances, country club memberships, and maintaining the illusion of a perfect suburban life.

I met them in the secondary waiting area so they wouldn't disturb Noah.

"Michael!" Eleanor rushed toward me, her face pale, hands trembling. "How is he? Can we see him?"

"No," I said, standing tall, blocking the corridor. "You cannot."

"Michael, please," Greg said, stepping forward with an irritated look on his face. "This whole thing is getting out of hand. Sarah is hysterical at home! She's crying her eyes out! She didn't know the boy was actually sick! Kids fake stomachaches all the time to get out of things or get attention! She was just trying to manage ten eight-year-olds at a party!"

I took a step toward Greg, closing the distance between us until I was staring right down into his eyes. Greg instinctively flinched back.

"Her nephew was dying five feet below her kitchen floor, Greg," I said, my voice thick with absolute hatred. "She heard him crying. She smashed his phone. She locked the door. She let him sit in his own vomit while he went into septic shock. If I had listened to her and gone home, my son would be in a body bag right now."

Greg swallowed nervously, looking at my father for support. "Look... it was an awful mistake, okay? A tragic misunderstanding! But calling the police? Pushing for charges? Michael, she's your sister! If she gets arrested, it will destroy my firm's reputation! It will ruin Matthew's life!"

"I don't give a damn about your firm, Greg," I snarled. "And I don't give a damn about Sarah's comfort. She made her choice when she turned the key in that basement door."

"Michael, please!" Eleanor sobbed, grabbing my forearm. "She's your sister! You can't put her in jail! What will people say? The family—"

I snatched my arm away from my mother's grip. "The family is dead, Mom. The moment Sarah locked Noah in that cold dark hole, this family stopped existing. Do not call me. Do not come up to his room. If any of you step foot on this floor again, I will have security escort you out in handcuffs."

Before Greg could reply, two uniformed police officers walked past us down the corridor toward the elevators, accompanied by Detective Vance.

Greg’s phone rang. He looked down at the caller ID, his face draining of color. He answered it quickly.

"Sarah? What? What's going on?"

We could hear Sarah’s frantic, screaming voice echoing through the phone speaker even from two feet away.

"Greg! The police are here! They have a warrant! They're taking me! They're putting handcuffs on me in front of the neighbors! Stop them! DO SOMETHING!"

Greg stared at me in sheer horror. "Michael... what did you do?"

"Justice, Greg," I whispered as I turned my back on them and walked back down the hallway to my son. "I'm just getting started."
