Chapter 2

The silence that follows his words is deafening.
Victoria's face crumples. For a second, I almost feel sorry for her. Almost. Then I remember seven years of loneliness. Seven years of wondering if my daughter was alive. Seven years of fear.
"You don't understand," Victoria whispers, tears streaming down her face. "I did it for us. For our family."
"Our family?" Ethan's voice cracks. "You stole a child, Victoria. You destroyed a woman's life. You lied to me every single day for seven years."
Lily presses herself against Ethan's leg, looking up at him with confused, frightened eyes. My heart aches for her. She doesn't understand any of this.
"Daddy," she says softly. "Who is that lady?"
Ethan kneels before her, his hands trembling as he brushes hair from her face.
"Lily," he says, his voice thick with emotion. "This... this is Elena."
He looks up at me, and in his eyes, I see everything—the pain, the confusion, the flicker of hope.
"She's your mother."
The words hang in the air.
Lily's eyes go wide. She looks at me, then back at Ethan, then at Victoria.
"No," Victoria says, her voice rising. "That's not true! Lily, I'm your mother! She's lying!"
She tries to step forward, but Ethan holds up a hand.
"Don't," he warns. "Not another word."
He stands, turning back to me. His eyes search my face, looking for something—proof, maybe, that I'm not a ghost. That this is real.
"Elena," he says softly. "Is it really you?"
I nod, unable to speak through the lump in my throat.
He takes a step toward me, then another. Victoria makes a sound of protest, but he ignores her. When he's close enough, he reaches out, his fingers brushing my cheek like he's afraid I'll vanish.
"You're alive," he breathes.
"I'm alive," I whisper.
Tears fill his eyes. "I thought you were dead. They told me you died in that car accident."
My blood runs cold.
"What?"
"Victoria showed me the police report," he says, his voice breaking. "The funeral. Everything. I mourned you, Elena. For years."
I look past him at Victoria, who stands frozen, her face a mask of rage and desperation.
She didn't just take my daughter. She told the man I loved that I was dead.
"I never died," I say, my voice shaking with anger. "She threatened me. Told me if I didn't leave and never come back, she'd make sure Lily was taken away from both of us. Told me she had connections, that she could make it look like an accident."
Ethan's face hardens. He turns to his wife.
"Is any of this true?"
Victoria's composure shatters completely.
"You were supposed to be mine!" she screams at me. "Everything was perfect until you showed up with that... that baby! He loved me, Elena! He was supposed to love only me!"
The words hit me like physical blows.
"I loved him too," I say, my voice steady now. "And he loved me. And Lily is his daughter. Nothing you can do will ever change that."
Victoria's eyes flash with something dangerous.
"You think you've won?" she laughs, a wild, hysterical sound. "You think you can just walk in here and take everything? I've built this life, Elena. I've been his wife for seven years. I've raised Lily as my own. You're nothing. A ghost from the past."
Ethan steps between us again, this time putting himself firmly on my side.
"Go pack your things, Victoria," he says quietly.
The words hang in the air.
Victoria stares at him, her mouth working silently.
"What?"
"You heard me," Ethan says, his voice cold and final. "Pack your things and get out of my house. Tonight."
"You can't do this," she whispers, tears streaming down her face. "Ethan, please. Think about what you're doing. Think about Lily."
"I am thinking about Lily," he says. "I'm thinking about the seven years she was stolen from her mother. I'm thinking about the lies you've told all of us. I'm thinking about the woman I loved who I thought was dead."
He takes my hand, and for the first time in seven years, I feel like I can breathe.
"Go," he says to Victoria. "Before I call the police."
Victoria looks from him to me, her face twisting with a hatred so intense it makes me shiver.
"This isn't over," she says, her voice low and dangerous. "You'll regret this, Elena. Both of you will regret this."
She turns and storms up the stairs, her footsteps heavy with rage.
I stand there, holding Ethan's hand, my heart pounding in my chest.
Lily looks up at me, her eyes still wide with confusion.
"Are you really my mommy?" she asks softly.
May you like
I kneel before her, tears streaming down my face. I reach out, my hand trembling, and gently touch her cheek. She's warm. Real.
"Yes, baby," I whisper. "I'm really your mommy."
