Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth

Three weeks after my divorce, I went back to my ex-wife’s house for a few forgotten boxes—and found our daughter locked inside the garage freezer, screaming for me. But when I pulled her out, shaking and blue-lipped, Lily whispered that her grandmother had put her there on purpose… and that it wasn’t the first time.

Taylor and I had been officially divorced for twenty-one days when her message appeared on my phone.

Pick up your stuff by Friday.

Nothing else.

I decided to go Thursday night, hoping I could grab my things without seeing her.

It was almost ten when I reached the house. Taylor’s car was gone, but the garage door was strangely wide open.

Then I noticed another car.

Evelyn’s.

My former mother-in-law had always been unusually involved in our lives. Even after the divorce, she was constantly at the house, claiming Taylor needed help taking care of Lily.

I’d never liked it.

That night, I finally learned why.

I walked into the garage and started searching through the boxes stacked along the walls. Everything around me felt like evidence of a life that had been dismantled—old photographs, furniture, Christmas decorations.

Then I heard something.

“Daddy!”

I froze.

The voice was faint and muffled.

“Daddy! Help me!”

My blood turned cold.

“Lily?”

Another scream came from across the garage.

I ran toward the sound and realized it was coming from the large chest freezer against the wall.

I grabbed the handle.

The lid opened.

And I nearly collapsed.

My seven-year-old daughter was curled into a ball inside.

Her skin was pale. Her lips were turning blue. Her tiny body shook uncontrollably between bags of frozen food.

“Oh my God—Lily!”

I lifted her out and wrapped her in my jacket, holding her against my chest while rubbing her arms and back.

“I’ve got you, sweetheart. Daddy’s here.”

She buried her face against me.

I could feel her teeth chattering against my shoulder.

“How did you get in there?” I asked. “Did you climb inside?”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

I looked toward the open garage.

“Then who put you there?”

She hesitated.

That hesitation terrified me more than her answer.

“Grandma.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“Grandma put me in.”

My hands stopped moving.

Lily looked up at me, tears gathering in her eyes.

“She does it when I’m bad.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand the words coming out of my own daughter’s mouth.

“Does what?”

“She puts me in the freezer.”

My stomach dropped.

I wanted desperately to believe she was confused.

Then she whispered one final sentence.

“She says the cold helps me think.”

That was when I understood something horrifying.

I hadn’t accidentally arrived one night early.

I had arrived just in time.

And somewhere inside that house was the woman who apparently never expected me to find out what she’d been doing to my daughter.
