Chapter 6 - The Return to the Estate

Two weeks later, the medical bills for Patrick’s surgery had been paid in full, the operation had been a complete success, and Patrick was resting comfortably in a private recovery room at Chicago General Hospital. Maeve had quit her job at the Ashford household with a cold, silent satisfaction that left Margaret and Sienna utterly bewildered. She had expected to return to her normal life, find a new job, and put the terrifying Marchetti ordeal behind her.
Instead, a sleek black town car was waiting outside her apartment building every morning.
Gabriel Ferraro, Elias’s head of security, had politely but firmly informed her that Mr. Marchetti required her presence at the estate each afternoon. Not as a housekeeper, and certainly not as a prisoner, but as a consultant of sorts—someone whose unvarnished perspective on the high-society world amused and intrigued him.
On a crisp Tuesday afternoon, Maeve stepped out of the town car and walked through the heavy iron gates of the Marchetti estate. The guards now nodded respectfully as she passed. She was no longer an invisible servant; she was a recognized guest.
She found Elias standing on the stone patio overlooking the private gardens, holding a cup of black coffee. He wore a charcoal-gray suit, his jacket open, looking every bit the ruthless corporate titan and underworld boss. But as she approached, a subtle shift occurred in his demeanor. The cold edge in his eyes softened.
“Your brother’s post-operative reports look promising,” Elias said without turning around, sensing her presence.
“He’s recovering faster than the doctors expected,” Maeve replied, stopping a few feet away. She crossed her arms, looking at him with a mixture of wariness and familiarity. “He asked me yesterday how I managed to afford the top-tier recovery suite at the hospital. I told him I won a small lottery.”
Elias turned, a faint smile touching his lips. “A prudent lie. You’re learning how to navigate Chicago politics.”
“I’m learning how to survive around you, which is a completely different skill set,” Maeve retorted.
Elias let out a low, genuine chuckle—a sound that rarely escaped him. He set his coffee cup down on a stone table and took a step closer. Over the past two weeks, their afternoon conversations had evolved from tense interrogations into sharp, witty verbal sparring matches. Maeve didn't cower, didn't flatter him, and didn't care about his money or his power. For a man who spent his entire life surrounded by sycophants and traitors, her unapologetic authenticity had become addictive.
“Sienna and her mother have been making desperate inquiries,” Elias noted, his expression turning serious. “They can’t understand why I haven't retaliated against them for the failed engagement, nor can they figure out how their former housekeeper suddenly vanished from their payroll and appeared on my guest list.”
Maeve raised an eyebrow. “Let them wonder. It’ll drive Margaret crazy trying to calculate your next move.”
“It already is,” Elias agreed. He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until Maeve could feel the warmth radiating from him. His grey eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. “They think I’m vulnerable because of the breakup. They think the Marchetti empire is ripe for a hostile takeover, utilizing the Ashford family’s social influence.”
“Are they right?” Maeve asked quietly.
“Not remotely,” Elias whispered. He reached out, his hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her cheek. The gesture was so tender, so out of character for Chicago’s most feared crime boss, that Maeve froze. “In fact, I’m preparing a counter-offensive. And I need someone by my side who isn't blinded by fear or ambition. Someone who actually sees me.”

Maeve’s heart raced, not with fear this time, but with a sudden, overwhelming rush of emotion. She looked up into his eyes, realizing with startling clarity that the dangerous experiment Elias had started months ago had finally reached its true conclusion. He wasn't testing her anymore.
He was falling in love. And terrifyingly, she was too.
