Chapter 4

The next week was chaos.

The Devereux Group's stock crashed.

Trading was halted.

The FBI opened an investigation.

My father and brother were called in for questioning.

Madison's engagement was broken off.

Publicly.

Humiliatingly.

Her fiancé's family released a statement saying they'd been "misled" about the Devereux family's character and business practices.

Madison called me screaming.

"You ruined my life!" she shrieked. "How could you do this to me?"

I said nothing.

She hung up on me.

My mother showed up at my apartment building.

The doorman called me.

"There's a woman here saying she's your mother. She's... quite upset."

"Don't let her up," I said.

I watched from my window as she stood on the sidewalk, screaming up at my building.

Neighbors stared.

Someone took a video.

It ended up on TMZ.

Evelyn Devereux, disgraced socialite, having a public meltdown.

My father called me that night.

His voice was cold.

Controlled.

But I could hear the fear underneath.

"We can make this go away," he said. "Come home. We'll give you money. Whatever you want. Just tell the authorities you made it all up."

"I didn't make anything up," I said.

"Claire," he warned. "You don't want to see what happens when you push me too far."

"I'm not scared of you anymore," I said.

And I hung up.

The threats started coming.

Anonymous letters.

Angry messages from people who'd lost money in the fraud.

My family's supporters blamed me for everything.

I was the villain in their story.

The ungrateful daughter who'd destroyed her own family.

But then something unexpected happened.

People started coming forward.

Former employees.

Investors.

Even some family friends.

They all had stories.

Stories about my father's ruthlessness.

About Logan's arrogance.

About my mother's cruelty.

And slowly, the narrative started to shift.

I wasn't the villain anymore.

I was the whistleblower.

The brave daughter who'd stood up to corruption.

I got letters from strangers.

Thanking me.

Telling me their own stories of family abuse.

Telling me I'd given them courage.

For the first time in my life, I felt like I wasn't alone.

But my family wasn't going down without a fight.

They hired the best lawyers money could buy.

They started a smear campaign against me.

Leaking stories about my "mental instability."

About my "greed."

About how I'd always been jealous of Madison.

It was exhausting.

Every day brought a new battle.

A new lie to refute.

A new threat to face.

But I didn't break.

Because I knew the truth.

And I knew what was coming.

The worst secret.

The one I'd been saving.

The one that would end this once and for all.

My father had been right about one thing.

No one would believe me if I just told them.

But I had proof.

May you like

Irrefutable proof.

And I was waiting for the perfect moment to use it.
