Chapter 7 - What Arthur Stole TooI spent months believing Arthur was the good Mercer.

Then Sophie found another recording.

That family had a talent for making peace impossible.

Arthur admitted he knew about some of Victoria's early financial misconduct years before Emily exposed it.

He ignored it.

Why?

Because Mercer Development was expanding.

A scandal would hurt financing.

He told himself he would investigate later.

Later became years.

By the time Emily brought proof, Arthur had to choose between admitting his own negligence and believing his daughter was unstable.

He chose himself.

That decision destroyed Emily.

I hated him for it.

Sophie didn't.

At least not immediately.

“He fixed it.”

I sat beside her.

“He tried.”

“Isn't that the same?”

“No.”

She frowned.

I explained.

“Repair matters. But it doesn't erase what came before.”

Sophie looked toward Arthur's photograph.

“So Grandpa was bad too?”

I hated that question.

Not because it was childish.

Because adults ask the same thing using longer words.

“I think Grandpa did some bad things.”

“Was he a bad person?”

“I don't know if that question helps.”

“Why?”

“Because if we decide only bad people hurt others, we stop watching good people make harmful choices.”

She thought for a long time.

“That's annoying.”

“Very.”

Arthur's fortune became subject to civil claims.

Emily's estate.

Pension victims.

Former employees.

Shareholders.

Sophie asked:

“Are they taking my money?”

“Some.”

“Is that fair?”

“Some of it.”

“How much will I have?”

“Still more money than anybody needs.”

She smiled.

“Can I buy a horse?”

“No.”

“Then what's the point?”

For the first time in months, we laughed.

I became trustee.

But I changed the structure.

Independent board.

Professional management.

No single family member controlling everything.

Sophie would not receive full control at eighteen.

Or twenty-one.

Trust distributions were tied to education, health and eventually independent governance.

She hated it.

“You're making rules for my money.”

“Yes.”

“Grandpa said it was mine.”

“It is.”

“Then why can't I buy three horses?”

“Because you're twelve.”

“One?”

“No.”

We eventually compromised.

Riding lessons.

Governance by negotiation.

The Mercer company was renamed after the family voted to remove the name.

Some called it erasing history.

I disagreed.

We preserved Arthur's records.

Emily's story.

The pension fraud.

Everything.

But the corporation no longer functioned as a monument to one bloodline.

Sophie proposed the new name:

Northbridge Development.

“Why?”

“Because bridges are better than towers.”

I didn't understand.

She explained:

“Towers are mostly about being higher than everybody.”

I stared.

“Arthur would hate that.”

May you like

She smiled.

“Good.”
