Chapter 9 - The First Visit
Margaret wrote letters from prison.
The first blamed Lydia.
Ethan did not respond.
The second blamed Richard.
No response.
The third blamed Emma.
Ethan returned it unopened.
A year passed.
Then:
I spent my entire life thinking a mother loses her son when another woman becomes more important.
Ethan read further.
I did not understand that I was supposed to lose that position.
He stopped.
Emma sat beside him.
Margaret continued:
Children grow. The mistake was not loving you. The mistake was treating your adulthood as abandonment.
No request.
No forgiveness demanded.
Ethan wrote back.
One sentence:
Keep going.
Two more years.
Eventually Ethan visited.
Alone.
Margaret looked older.
“Where is Emma?”
“Home.”
“Sophie?”
“Home.”
Margaret nodded.
She understood.
“Will I ever see them?”
“I don’t know.”
She cried.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
Margaret looked at him.
He had learned from Prudence? No, different story. He wanted specificity.
She understood.
“For lying about Sophie.”
“Yes.”
“For trying to remove Emma.”
“Yes.”
“For using Lydia.”
“Yes.”
“For confusing control with love.”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Then Margaret whispered:
“And for teaching you that boundaries were betrayal.”
Ethan stared.
That one mattered.
They spoke for an hour.
No reconciliation.
No restoration.
Just beginning.
Emma later asked:
“How was it?”
“Sad.”
“Good sad?”
“There’s no good version.”
She nodded.
