THE WEDDING HE LET CONTINUE / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - Robert’s Last Exit

Robert did not get far.

The plane never left California.

Claire had already warned investigators that Robert might attempt to move assets or flee. When his passport was flagged and the private flight plan appeared, authorities stopped the aircraft before departure.

Robert was not arrested for cheating on his wife.

He was detained because financial investigators had obtained evidence of forged documents, unauthorized transfers, and potential conspiracy to defraud shareholders.

Margaret learned about it while sitting in her kitchen drinking tea.

She felt almost nothing.

That frightened her at first.

Then she understood.

Shock had limits.

Eventually the body stopped volunteering new emotions.

Nathan arrived an hour later.

“Are you okay?”

Margaret looked at him.

“No. But I will be.”

Robert called that evening through his attorney.

Margaret declined.

He called again the next day.

She declined.

On the third day, she accepted.

Not because she wanted closure.

Because she wanted to hear what a man said after losing the ability to control the room.

Robert’s voice came through the speaker.

“Margaret.”

She said nothing.

“I need you to understand this has been exaggerated.”

She almost smiled.

Thirty-one years of marriage, and he still began with minimization.

“Which part?” she asked. “The affair, the forged signature, the stolen millions, or using our son’s wedding as a corporate takeover?”

Silence.

Robert lowered his voice.

“I never intended to hurt Nathan.”

“You paid a woman to marry him.”

“I believed she cared about him.”

“You were sleeping with her.”

Another silence.

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Robert, listen carefully. I am filing for divorce. My attorney will communicate with yours. Do not call me again unless it concerns a medical emergency involving Nathan.”

“Margaret, please.”

“No.”

“I love you.”

For the first time, her voice changed.

“I think you loved being forgiven by me.”

Robert inhaled sharply.

“That is not the same thing.”

She ended the call.

Across town, Audrey was also making decisions.

Her cooperation agreement became formal.

She handed investigators phones, bank records, emails, and a hidden cloud backup Robert did not know existed.

The backup contained the message that destroyed his final defense.

Robert to Audrey, six months before the wedding:

Nathan is the cleanest route. Marry him, get the proxy, and let me handle Margaret. Once the holding company is formed, the rest is paperwork.

Audrey replied:

And us?

Robert:

After the dust settles.

A second message, sent two weeks later, was worse.

Audrey:

What if Nathan refuses to sign?

Robert:

He won’t. He wants a family too badly.

Nathan read that message in Claire’s office.

For the first time since the wedding, he cried.

Not dramatically.

He simply sat in the chair and tears came.

Claire waited.

Nathan finally said, “He knew exactly what I wanted.”

“A family?”

Nathan nodded.

“And he used it.”

Claire said, “That says something about him. Not about the thing you wanted.”

Nathan looked at her.

“I don’t know how I’m supposed to trust anyone after this.”

“You don’t have to know today.”

The investigation widened.

Martin Cole, Robert’s longtime associate, agreed to cooperate after learning Robert had kept private ledgers showing Martin as the recipient of several illicit payments.

Eleanor Bishop hired a criminal attorney.

Sable Coast Consulting’s accounts were frozen.

The land held through Monarch Ridge was seized pending civil litigation.

And Margaret discovered that the condominium in Cabo was not the only hidden property.

Robert had also purchased an apartment in San Francisco.

The deed was held in the name of a woman named Celia Warren.

Celia was not Audrey.

When investigators contacted her, she said she had been in a relationship with Robert for four years.

Margaret laughed when Claire told her.

Nathan looked worried.

“Mom?”

“I’m sorry.”

She covered her face, still laughing.

“He cheated on the woman he was cheating on me with.”

Nathan started laughing too.

It was the first genuinely funny moment they had shared in weeks.

The laughter did not erase the damage.

But it proved something important.

Robert had not destroyed their ability to feel anything except betrayal.

That night Margaret removed her wedding ring.

She placed it in a drawer.

Not dramatically.

Not with tears.

May you like

Just quietly.

Then she slept for eight uninterrupted hours for the first time since the wedding.
