Chapter 8 - The Real Debt

Mark and Malcolm had never been simple enemies.

They were business partners.

The threats, the hotel meeting and even the attempted shooting at the farmhouse were pieces of a conflict inside a criminal operation they had built together.

Malcolm managed betting and laundering. Mark supplied medication and information about wealthy surgical patients. Thomas altered inventory records.

Their partnership failed after three hundred thousand dollars disappeared.

Malcolm believed Mark had stolen it.

Mark believed Malcolm had kept it.

In reality, Rachel had intercepted the transfer.

When Ortiz confronted her, she finally admitted everything.

“I moved the money out of Evelyn Holdings before Mark could take Emma,” she said.

“You knew about the escape plan?”

“I found the forged passport two days before the party.”

“Why didn’t you call police?”

“I had no proof Mark had created it. Thomas told me I was misunderstanding.”

“So you took the money.”

“I placed it in an account Mark couldn’t access. I planned to force him to tell you the truth.”

“Instead, he believed Malcolm stole it.”

“Yes.”

Her interference triggered the final crisis. Mark’s debt remained unpaid. Malcolm planned to confront him. Mark accelerated his escape. Thomas drugged Emma. Rachel attended the party intending to expose Mark after the candles were lit.

“What were you smiling about?” I asked.

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I had placed copies of the passport and bank records inside his birthday gift bag. When Emma collapsed and Mark immediately accused me, I realized he had prepared for me to take the blame. I smiled because the cruelty of it was almost unbelievable.”

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“No more secret protection.”

“No more.”

Police traced the transport van to an abandoned surgical supply warehouse near the harbor.

A phone belonging to Malcolm’s driver connected briefly to a nearby tower. Ortiz believed Mark and Malcolm were waiting for access to a boat.

Then I received a video call.

Mark appeared on the screen.

He was inside a dark room. His face was bruised.

“Claire, Malcolm has Rachel.”

I turned.

Rachel was standing beside me.

Mark saw her and froze.

Someone behind him laughed.

Malcolm stepped into view.

“Your husband still thinks lies work when the audience can see the truth.”

“Why did you help him escape?” I asked.

“I wanted the location of the money.”

“He doesn’t have it.”

“I know that now.”

Malcolm placed a gun against Mark’s shoulder.

“He says you do.”

“I don’t.”

Rachel whispered, “I can return it.”

Malcolm heard her.

“Excellent. Bring the account access to the warehouse.”

Ortiz shook his head and began writing instructions on a pad.

Keep him talking.

“What happens after you receive the money?” I asked.

“I leave.”

“And Mark?”

Malcolm smiled.

“That depends on whether you still want him.”

“I don’t.”

Mark flinched.

For years, he had relied on the belief that I would protect our marriage after any betrayal. Hearing the opposite frightened him more than the gun.

“Claire, I made mistakes.”

“You asked your father to drug our daughter.”

“I never wanted her hurt.”

“You wanted her unconscious and frightened so you could use her against me.”

“I was going to bring her back.”

“When?”

“After I fixed everything.”

Malcolm laughed again.

“He always says that.”

I looked directly into the camera.

“Mark, tell the truth about the lemonade.”

His face tightened.

“My father mixed it.”

“Under your instruction.”

“I told him to use a safe dose.”

“There is no safe dose for kidnapping a child.”

“I was desperate.”

“Why did you frame Rachel?”

“Because she had prepared the drinks. It was believable.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

I continued.

“Did you place the syringe in the garage?”

“Yes.”

“Did you hide the vial in the kitchen trash?”

“Yes.”

“Did you plan to move it into Rachel’s car?”

Mark looked confused.

“How do you know that?”

I did not.

But his question became an answer.

Malcolm turned toward the sound of a vehicle outside.

“Time is over.”

The video ended.

Ortiz’s team had traced the call.

Police surrounded the warehouse.

Before entering, Ortiz gave me an earpiece.

“You remain in the vehicle.”

This time, I agreed.

I had spent days running toward danger because everyone else kept placing me outside the truth. But Emma needed one parent who chose to return home.

Shots sounded inside the warehouse.

Then silence.

An officer’s voice came through the radio.

“Malcolm is down. Bennett is alive.”

A second voice followed.

“Wait. We have an explosive device attached to the chemical storage area.”

Mark had not escaped with Malcolm merely to find money.

He had planned to destroy the warehouse and every record linking him to the drug network.

He was not Malcolm’s hostage.

They had entered together intending to betray each other.
