Chapter 5 - Bellwether Road

Sarah wanted to call the police. She wanted to put the photograph in an evidence bag and hand it to someone who knew what to do. Instead, she forwarded the message to Priya and called Jonah Reed.Jonah had been a hospital investigator before retiring to run a small private practice. Sarah knew him through a patient-safety case and trusted his methodical mind.“Don’t go anywhere alone,” he said after she explained.“I’m already alone.”“Then wait for me.”“I need to see Bellwether Road.”He sighed. “You’re going to go anyway.”“Yes.”“Send me your location.”Sarah left Leo with Mrs. Alvarez and drove north. Bellwether Road ran along the river through an old industrial district. The carriage house stood behind a leaning iron fence, its brick walls dark with rain. The blue Volvo was parked beneath a broken awning.Sarah did not approach it. She photographed the plate and the building from her car. A second vehicle waited across the street: a black SUV with tinted windows. The carriage-house door opened.Avery Vale stepped out wearing the same green coat. Without the supermarket lights, she looked younger, almost fragile. The scar above her eye disappeared into damp blonde hair.Sarah lowered her phone.Avery walked directly toward her.Sarah locked the doors.“You need to leave,” Avery said through the glass.“You sent me a picture from my bedroom.”“I sent it because you deserved to know the truth.”“You entered my home.”“Mark let me in.”“You knew the secret knock.”“Your husband taught it to me.”Sarah felt anger rise hot and clean. “Why were you wearing my necklace?”“Because it belonged to my grandmother.”“That is not an answer.”“It was the only way I could make you look at me.”Sarah opened the window two inches. “You could have called.”“I did. Mark intercepted every message.”“Why would he do that?”“Because he wanted the ledger before I found it.”The black SUV started its engine.Avery glanced toward it. “You have to go.”“Who is in that car?”“Someone who has been following me for three days.”The SUV rolled forward.Sarah started her own car. Avery ran toward the carriage house.“Wait!” Sarah called. The SUV accelerated.Sarah pulled onto the road, forcing the driver to brake. The vehicle swerved around her and disappeared toward the river.Jonah called. “I saw the SUV. Are you hurt?”“No.”“Get out of there.”Sarah parked beside the fence. Avery was waiting inside the carriage house with a flashlight.“You shouldn’t have come in,” Avery said.“I know.”The interior smelled of wet wood and dust. Old shelves lined the walls. At the back stood a small upright piano, its keys yellowed with age.“The music box,” Sarah said.“Not here.”“What is this place?”“Your husband’s family used it as a records office.”“My husband said it was inactive.”“Mark says many things when he is afraid.”Avery pulled a folder from beneath a loose floorboard. “Claire kept copies of everything. She believed the Whitakers were moving money through properties that never existed.”Sarah opened the folder. The pages were water-stained, but several names remained legible. Whitaker Development. Blue Lantern Properties. Bellwether Archives. One line was circled in red: River House—original deed and beneficiary ledger.“What is River House?” Sarah asked.“An estate outside town. The Whitakers claim it was demolished in 2008.”“Was it?”“No.”Footsteps sounded outside.Avery extinguished the flashlight.Sarah’s pulse jumped. The carriage-house door handle moved once, then again.Jonah’s voice came from the street. “Sarah!”The handle stopped. An engine roared away.Jonah entered with his phone raised. “I recorded the plate.”“Did you see the driver?” Sarah asked.“No. But I saw a man leaving the side door.”Avery looked at Sarah. “Now you understand why I came to your house.”“No,” Sarah said. “I understand why you wanted me frightened.”“Fear makes people notice what comfort hides.”Jonah examined the folders. “You both need legal counsel.”Avery’s expression hardened. “Counsel is how my mother lost.”“Your mother lost because she went alone,” Jonah replied.Outside, rain began striking the roof again.Sarah picked up the folder. “Tell me about River House.”Avery hesitated. Then she said, “It is where Claire was last seen alive.”
