THE ROOM BEHIND THE WALL / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - What Happened After the Cameras LeftThe television crews disappeared within weeks.

Recovery did not.

Emily hated closed doors.

At school, she refused to use bathroom stalls if the lock clicked loudly.

When classroom lights dimmed for movies, she panicked.

Rachel began carrying a tiny flashlight.

Not because Emily needed it forever.

Because right now she did.

Therapist Dr. Olivia Grant taught them not to force bravery.

“Safety first.”

Rachel nodded.

“Then confidence.”

Emily slowly improved.

So did the other children.

Sophie stopped sleeping beneath her bed.

Tyler stopped screaming when teachers raised their voices.

Noah, the boy who warned everyone, became terrified that Monica would return because he had “gotten her in trouble.”

His father told him repeatedly:

“She got herself in trouble.”

Lauren reunited gradually with Ethan.

Custody was reopened after the false evaluations were discredited.

Mark Parker admitted he had accepted Bright Horizons legal assistance.

He apologized.

Lauren did not immediately forgive him.

Ethan began supervised time with her.

The first meeting lasted twenty minutes.

He barely remembered her.

Lauren cried afterward.

Rachel sat beside her.

“I thought winning the case would give him back.”

Rachel understood.

Courts could correct records.

They couldn't restore years.

“Give him time.”

“What if he never sees me as Mom again?”

Rachel had no comforting guarantee.

“Then build whatever relationship he can safely give you.”

Lauren nodded.

Painfully.

That was harder than demanding the title she deserved.

Rachel eventually moved to Boston.

Emily chose the new school with her.

They toured five.

At each one, Emily asked:

“Do you have quiet rooms?”

Rachel let her ask.

School four said yes.

Emily immediately stiffened.

The principal opened the room.

No lock.

Large windows.

Beanbags.

Children could enter and leave freely.

Emily inspected the door.

Then said:

May you like

“This one's okay.”

They enrolled.
