Chapter 8 - THE FINAL TRAP

The federal investigation became enormous.

What began with a roll of film became a network involving corporations, private investigators, former officials and stolen records.

Victor Hale was at the center.

But he knew the archive had been discovered.

He disappeared.

Again.

For weeks, agents followed leads.

Bank accounts were frozen.

Safe houses were searched.

Former employees were questioned.

Elias finally cooperated.

He provided the location of Victor's primary server.

The server contained years of surveillance.

Not only my family.

Hundreds of people.

Executives.

Politicians.

Journalists.

Judges.

Witnesses.

Victor had collected secrets and used them as weapons.

The evidence was overwhelming.

But Victor remained free.

Then Sarah received a message.

COME HOME.

She looked at me.

"It means he's ready."

Federal agents created a controlled operation.

Sarah would return to the house.

Victor believed she still possessed a copy of the archive.

She did not.

But we needed him to believe she did.

The house was wired with federal surveillance.

Every room monitored.

Every entrance guarded.

At 11:30 p.m., the front door opened.

Victor entered.

He looked older than his photographs.

But his eyes were the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

He smiled at Sarah.

"You should have stayed dead."

She answered,

"So should you."

Victor laughed.

Then he looked toward me.

"You have no idea what your father built."

"I know enough."

"No."

He stepped closer.

"Your father built something powerful."

"He built something criminal."

"Power is never clean."

Sarah interrupted.

"You destroyed lives."

Victor's smile vanished.

"I preserved order."

I pressed the hidden button beneath the table.

Federal agents entered.

Victor's face changed.

He reached for his jacket.

Agents shouted.

He froze.

Then he laughed.

"You think this ends here?"

An agent handcuffed him.

"No."

She looked him in the eyes.

"It begins here."

Victor was arrested.

The network collapsed over the following months.

Elias testified.

Daniel received protection after cooperating.

The people who had helped Victor were charged.

The hidden rooms were dismantled.

The surveillance equipment was destroyed.

The house was finally quiet.

But I still had one thing left.

The final roll of film.

The original.

The one that had started everything.

I took it to the camera shop.

The owner developed it carefully.

There were thirty-six photographs.

But the final photograph was different.

It showed my bedroom.

Empty.

Sunlight poured through the curtains.

The bed was neatly made.

No shadow.

No hidden figure.

Nothing.

On the back, someone had written:

NO MORE SECRETS.
