Chapter 16 - Evidence in the Light
The trial began eight months later.
By then, the newspapers had exhausted the most sensational details. They had stopped printing photographs of the yacht and started printing spreadsheets, court exhibits, and interviews with workers whose pensions had nearly vanished.
Arthur attended every hearing.
Elena entered the courtroom in a dark suit without jewelry. Victor wore a plain gray shirt and kept his hands folded. Gideon looked unchanged, as if a criminal indictment were merely an inconvenient meeting.
The prosecution charged them with conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, fraud, embezzlement, and obstruction. The wider case against Northstar Meridian included bribery, securities violations, money laundering, and theft from public contracts.
Elena’s attorney argued that she had been manipulated by Gideon and coerced by Arthur’s neglect. Victor’s attorney argued that he had believed the yacht plan was a staged disappearance designed to frighten Arthur into selling the company.
The claims were painful because pieces of them were true.
On the first day of testimony, Arthur sat beneath the seal of the court and described the yacht.
“What did you feel when you entered the water?” the prosecutor asked.
“Cold. Panic. Then the certainty that no one was coming.”
“Did you believe you would survive?”
“No.”
“Why did you?”
Arthur looked toward Elena and Victor. “A reef cut the anchor line.”
The courtroom remained silent.
“Did you see the defendants after you entered the water?”
“Yes.”
“What did they do?”
“They watched.”
The defense tried to make him angry. They questioned his weight, his marriage, his business failures, and his absence from Elena’s life. Arthur answered without hiding behind dignity.
“Were you a good husband?”
“No.”
“Did you neglect your wife?”
“Yes.”
“Did you control the company in a way that isolated others?”
“Yes.”
“Then why should this jury believe you?”
Arthur faced the attorney. “Because my failures do not turn a murder attempt into a misunderstanding. I was arrogant. I was absent. I was wrong about people. None of that gave anyone the right to tie an anchor to me and throw me into the sea.”
Maya testified next.
She described finding Arthur on the beach, performing CPR, and caring for him during his recovery. The defense suggested that she had helped him create Alexander Cross to destroy Elena.
“Did Mr. Vale pay you to help him?”
“No.”
“Did he promise you money?”
“No.”
“Did you become romantically involved?”
Maya looked toward Arthur, then back to the attorney. “Eventually.”
“So you have a personal interest in protecting him.”
“I have a personal interest in telling the truth.”
“You expect this jury to believe that you rescued a powerful stranger and then helped him dismantle a corporation out of kindness?”
“No,” Maya said. “I helped him because he was alive. I stayed because he learned how to be worth trusting.”
The answer appeared in newspapers the next morning.
Arthur did not read them.
During a recess, Elena asked to speak with him. The meeting took place in a guarded room at the courthouse.
“I did love you once,” she said.
Arthur sat across from her. “I believe you.”
“That should make you angry.”
“It makes me sad.”
She looked down. “I hated being invisible.”
“I made you invisible.”
“You made everyone invisible.”
“Yes.”
Elena’s eyes filled. “You could have taken revenge and called it justice.”
“I wanted to.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Arthur thought of the beach, the clinic, the village children, and Maya’s hands pressing against his chest.
“Because someone saved me without asking what I was worth.”
Elena looked away.

When the trial resumed, the jury heard the recovered audio, the account records, the insurance policy, and the testimony of Samuel Cho. The evidence did not depend on Arthur’s transformation or Maya’s loyalty. It formed a chain stronger than any single witness.
For the first time, the truth did not need him to carry it alone.
