He walked into the federal building voluntarily.
Adrian waited three hours before seeing him.
When Daniel entered the interview room, he looked exhausted.
Older.
The sad eyes Sophie described seemed even deeper.
Adrian said nothing.
Daniel sat.
“I’m sorry.”
“For the device?”
“For everything.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Because Victor showed me footage of Grace leaving the hospital.”
Adrian went still.
“He knew her schedule.”
“Doctors.”
“Nurses.”
“Everything.”
“You thought he’d hurt her?”
“I didn’t know what he would do.”
Silence.
Daniel continued.
“So I obeyed.”
“At first.”
“Then I realized the original device had been there months before Victor recruited me.”
“Who installed that one?”
Daniel looked up.
“Your father’s old security system.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
The original hardware was embedded inside a security upgrade ordered years earlier.
Meaning Victor did not create the surveillance infrastructure.
He inherited it.
Thomas Vale had been monitoring executives for years.
Victor simply modernized the system.
Adrian leaned back.
His father had spent decades teaching him:
Trust family. Control everyone else.
Apparently Thomas trusted nobody.
Not employees.
Not board members.
Perhaps not even his own son.
Daniel whispered:
“I put my device under your desk because Sophie sometimes plays there.”
Adrian stared.
“You knew she’d find it?”
“I hoped someone would.”
“Why her?”
“Adults ignore things that look normal.”
He almost smiled.
“Children don’t.”
Adrian remembered Sophie saying:
