Chapter 11 - The Investigator in the Apron

Elena Ward did not behave like someone who had come to arrest Claire. She behaved like someone who wanted Claire to think she had come to arrest her.
The warrant covered the bakery’s office, records, and storage room. Claire stood aside while agents searched drawers and examined invoices. Roman waited outside with Ellis and Mateo, refusing to enter unless Claire asked him to.
“You can come in,” Claire said at last.
He entered, but kept his hands visible. Elena noticed.
“You’re learning,” she said.
Roman’s eyes narrowed. “We have met.”
“Twice. You threatened a shipping executive in my presence.”
“I warned him.”
“He called it a threat.”
“He had options.”
Elena turned to Claire. “Your father left a trail that leads here. We believe the bakery was used to move records.”
Claire opened her recipe notebook. “The bakery was used to hide a code.”
“That distinction matters in court.”
“Then help me prove it.”
Elena studied her. “Roman wants you to trust him.”
“Roman wants me alive. That is not the same thing.”
Roman said nothing, and Claire appreciated him for it.
An agent called Elena from the storage room. He had found a false panel behind the damaged shelves. Inside was a metal tin containing bank records and a flash drive.
Claire recognized the handwriting on the tin. Daniel had written her name across the lid.
“Open it,” she said.
Elena did. Inside was a letter.
Claire read it aloud. Daniel explained that he had hidden proof of Dominic’s crimes in three places, but the evidence could only be assembled by someone who understood the recipe code. He also wrote that Susan had not known the location of every hiding place.
Susan’s face tightened when they showed her the letter.
“He was trying to protect me,” she said.
“He was protecting everyone,” Claire replied. “That is different.”
The flash drive contained photographs of a shipping company owned by Victor. Several containers had been marked for charitable food distribution but never reached their destinations.
Roman stared at the records. “Victor has been using my name.”
“Your name was useful,” Elena said. “So was your reputation.”
Claire understood the shape of the trap. Victor had committed crimes under Roman’s shadow, then arranged for evidence to point toward Roman when the investigation began.
“Where is my father?” Claire asked.
Elena hesitated. “We have reason to believe he is being held at a private rehabilitation center outside the city.”
Roman’s voice hardened. “Victor owns it.”
“Through a shell company,” Elena said. “We need proof before we move.”
“He could be hurt,” Claire said.
“He may also be part of the operation,” Elena replied. “We cannot assume innocence because he is your father.”
Claire absorbed that. She had spent her life imagining Daniel as a lost hero. She needed the truth, not a replacement fantasy.
“I will help,” she said.
Roman turned toward her. “No.”
She faced him. “You do not get to decide.”
“This is too dangerous.”
“So is letting federal agents walk into a trap.”
Elena looked between them. “The facility receives weekly pastry deliveries from a bakery in McKees Rocks. We can use that route to get a witness inside.”
Claire lifted an eyebrow. “You want me to deliver dessert to a criminal holding site?”
“I want you to do what you already do. Bake. Observe. Report.”
Roman stepped closer. “If you do this, you follow my instructions.”
“No. I follow the plan we agree on.”
His jaw worked. Then he nodded. “Agreed.”
Elena handed Claire a small transmitter disguised as a thermometer.
That night, Lily found Claire in the kitchen packing pastry boxes.
“Are you going to find my grandfather?” Lily asked.
“I am going to find my father.”
“You sound scared.”
“I am.”
Lily took a small green ribbon from her pocket. “My mother used this when she wanted me to remember something.”
Claire accepted it. “What should I remember?”
“That people can be afraid and still tell the truth.”
The next morning, Claire drove toward the rehabilitation center with a van full of pies.
On the passenger seat, the transmitter clicked once.
May you like
Someone inside the center had already activated it.
And someone whispered through the hidden channel, “Claire, if you can hear me, do not trust Roman.”
