Chapter 12 - THE VAULT BENEATH THE CITY

The Moretti vault wasn't hidden in a mansion.

It wasn't under a bank.

It was beneath an abandoned restaurant in Newark.

The building had been closed for fourteen years.

Windows boarded.

Sign fading.

A rusted security gate covered the entrance.

Dante stared at it.

“My father owned this place.”

“Why?”

“He told everyone it had failed.”

Nathan ran his hand over the wall.

“Doesn't look like a failed business.”

We entered through a side door.

Behind the kitchen was a narrow staircase.

At the bottom was a steel door.

Dante tried three different keys.

Nothing.

Then he noticed an old symbol engraved in the metal.

A small black circle surrounded by four lines.

He touched it.

The lock opened.

The room beyond was enormous.

Shelves filled with boxes.

Metal cabinets.

Old computers.

Paper records.

Photographs.

And at the center—

a safe.

Dante stared.

“My father never mentioned this.”

Beatrice looked around.

“How much of your family's life is hidden underground?”

“Apparently more than I'd like.”

Nathan opened the first box.

Inside were company ledgers.

Construction contracts.

Property purchases.

But the second box was different.

It contained police reports.

Disappearances.

Dead investors.

Falsified accidents.

The same names appeared repeatedly.

Victor Bell.

Arthur Wilkes.

Marianne Vale.

And Lorenzo Moretti.

Beatrice looked at Dante.

“Your father wasn't only investigating the network.”

“No.”

“He was part of it.”

Dante's expression tightened.

“I already knew some of that.”

“Not this.”

He opened another file.

Inside was a letter from Lorenzo.

The only reason I remain involved is because they will kill everyone if I leave.

Arthur believes money protects him.

Victor believes information protects him.

I believe people do.

I may be wrong.

Dante read it twice.

His father had been trapped.

Not innocent.

Not entirely guilty.

But trapped.

Beatrice understood that feeling.

The difference was that her father had eventually tried to protect his children.

Lorenzo had tried to protect people inside an organization built around criminality.

Then Nathan found a blue folder.

His face changed.

“Bea.”

She took it.

Inside was a hospital photograph.

A newborn.

A boy.

The date matched Nathan's birth.

But beneath the photograph was a second name.

Samuel Bell.

Nathan stared.

“Who is Samuel Bell?”

Beatrice looked toward Dante.

“Another identity.”

The file explained that the baby had originally been registered under the Bell family name.

Then transferred.

Then renamed.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Someone had manipulated children's identities for decades.

Beatrice felt sick.

“This isn't just financial.”

“No,” Dante said.

“It never was.”

The network had been moving people.

Children.

Heirs.

Witnesses.

Anyone who could change the balance of wealth.

The money was only one part.

Control of identity was the real weapon.

Nathan whispered:

“I was hidden because my name mattered.”

Beatrice nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then how many others?”

No one answered.

The answer came from the database.

There were at least sixty-seven altered identities.

Children removed from family records.

Heirs reassigned.

Names changed.

Birth records altered.

Some had been adopted.

Others had disappeared.

Some were dead.

Beatrice closed the file.

“They built fortunes by controlling people before those people knew who they were.”

Dante looked at her.

“What do we do?”

“Find them.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“All of them?”

“All of them.”

For the first time, they were no longer investigating a crime.

They were investigating lives.

The vault held one final document.

A list of names.

A code beside each.

One name was highlighted.

B. Gallagher — Status: ACTIVE.

Beatrice's blood froze.

Her own name.

Beside it was a date.

The date she had started working at Wilkes & Hart.

But that wasn't possible.

She looked at the final line.

NEXT TARGET — MORETTI HEIR.

Dante's face became cold.

“Me.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Why?”

A loud sound echoed above them.

A door slammed.

Then another.

Someone had entered the building.

Dante switched off the lights.

They stood in darkness.

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Measured.

A voice came through the stairwell.

“Mr. Moretti.”

Dante froze.

May you like

The voice belonged to Victor Bell.

A man who was supposed to have died twenty-seven years earlier.
