THE MAN THEY CALLED A NOBODY / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - Harrison’s Last BargainVanessa did not meet Harrison alone.

Federal agents arranged everything.

The meeting took place at a waterfront restaurant Harrison believed was private.

Vanessa wore a recording device.

Emily waited in a surveillance vehicle with Agent Chen.

Daniel stayed at another location because investigators did not want Harrison spooked.

Harrison arrived twenty minutes late.

He looked different.

No polished wedding tuxedo.

No effortless confidence.

Just a frightened man watching his empire disappear.

Vanessa sat across from him.

“What did my mother plan?”

Harrison smiled.

“Still worried about Emily?”

“Yes.”

“That’s new.”

Vanessa ignored it.

“Talk.”

Harrison leaned closer.

“The insurance policy wasn’t about killing her.”

Vanessa’s stomach turned.

“I didn’t say it was.”

“Your face did.”

He explained.

Patricia wanted the policy because if Emily became medically incapacitated before reclaiming her trust, certain emergency proxy provisions might activate.

The insurance would cover debts during the transition.

Vanessa stared.

“Medically incapacitated?”

Harrison stopped.

Too late.

“What did you plan?”

“Nothing.”

“Harrison.”

“Your mother had ideas.”

Emily felt cold inside the surveillance van.

Agent Chen leaned closer to the audio.

Vanessa continued.

“What ideas?”

Harrison rubbed his jaw.

“She said Emily had anxiety.”

“She doesn’t.”

“I know.”

“She wanted medical records created?”

Silence.

That was enough.

Investigators later found contact between Patricia and a private physician willing to document false mental-health concerns.

The plan was not murder.

It was legal incapacitation.

Portray Emily as emotionally unstable.

Challenge her control of the trust.

Use Patricia as emergency representative.

It was quieter than violence.

Cleaner.

And potentially devastating.

Vanessa stared at Harrison.

“You were going to help my mother declare my sister incompetent?”

“I was trying to save companies.”

“You were trying to steal.”

“Everyone steals at that level.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

She finally understood the lie people like Harrison and Patricia depended on.

If corruption was described as normal often enough, conscience began to sound childish.

Harrison leaned back.

“You think Emily is better than us?”

“Yes.”

He laughed.

Vanessa surprised herself.

“I think she always was.”

Harrison’s expression darkened.

“You were easier before.”

“Before what?”

“Before you realized nobody at that wedding respected you.”

That landed.

But it no longer controlled her.

Vanessa stood.

“One person did.”

“Who?”

“My sister.”

Harrison laughed.

“She removed you from the company.”

“Yes.”

“And you call that respect?”

“She told me the truth.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You only told me what made me useful.”

She walked away.

Agents entered seconds later.

Harrison was arrested for additional conspiracy charges.

When Vanessa came outside, Emily was waiting.

For several seconds they stood facing each other.

Then Vanessa said:

“I’m sorry I made you the joke at my wedding.”

Emily looked at her.

“I’m sorry your wedding became evidence.”

Vanessa started laughing.

Emily did too.

It was inappropriate.

Exhausted.

Strangely healing.

Then Vanessa hugged her.

Not because everything had been repaired.

Because they had finally stopped pretending nothing was broken.

Months later Harrison pleaded guilty to multiple financial crimes.

Patricia went to trial.

Richard testified against her.

The family became tabloid material.

Vanessa sold her mansion.

Returned jewelry purchased through questionable family accounts.

Started working.

Actually working.

At a small event-management firm.

On her first day, Emily sent her a message:

Careful. They may expect you to arrive before noon.

Vanessa replied:

Blocked.

Then:

Love you.

Emily stared at the words.

She typed:

May you like

Love you too.

It was the first time they had said it in years without one of them wanting something.
