Chapter 10: The Lion’s Judgment

The helicopter hovered above the river.

Dante didn’t move.

He couldn’t.

The man in the doorway looked exactly as he had twenty years ago.

Silver hair.

Black coat.

The same scar beneath his left eye.

The man Dante had buried.

The man everyone believed was dead.

“Father.”

The man stepped down from the helicopter.

“Don’t come closer.”

Dante ignored him.

“You’re dead.”

“I let the world believe that.”

“You watched everything.”

“I had to.”

Mara stood between them, the three brass keys in her hand.

“You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“You let me live as a maid.”

“I let you stay invisible.”

Gunfire erupted from the trees.

More mercenaries.

More SUVs.

The old woman shouted,

“They found us!”

Dante’s father drew a pistol and fired with terrifying precision.

Three attackers dropped.

“Move!”

They ran toward the helicopter.

The pilot screamed,

“We have thirty seconds!”

Bullets hammered the landing zone.

Mara climbed aboard first.

Dante turned back.

Marco.

Alive.

Bleeding.

Dragging himself across the mud.

He aimed a pistol.

At Dante’s father.

Dante fired.

Too late.

Marco’s shot hit first.

The bullet struck Dante’s father in the chest.

He fell.

Mara jumped back onto the ground.

“No!”

She caught him before he hit the mud.

He grabbed her wrist.

“Vault Three.”

She held up the keys.

“I have them.”

He shook his head.

“The keys open the door.”

He looked directly into her eyes.

“You are the door.”

She froze.

“What does that mean?”

He smiled sadly.

“The ledger isn’t paper.”

He reached into his coat and removed a small metal capsule.

“No one could be trusted with it.”

He pressed the capsule into her hand.

“It was implanted in your memory.”

Mara stared at him.

“My memory?”

“You were never engineered to be a weapon.”

He struggled to breathe.

“You were trained to be a vault.”

Everything stopped.

The nightmares.

The fighting.

The missing years.

The fragments.

They weren’t accidents.

The Lion Ledger had been encoded into her mind.

Every account.

Every name.

Every betrayal.

She carried the archive inside her.

Dante looked at his father.

“You erased her.”

“I saved her.”

“You destroyed her life.”

“I gave her a chance to choose.”

The old woman screamed.

“Incoming!”

A missile streaked toward the helicopter.

Dante grabbed Mara.

The explosion tore the aircraft apart.

Fire swallowed the landing zone.

The shockwave threw everyone into the river.

Mara hit the water hard.

The capsule slipped from her hand.

She reached for it.

A hand reached first.

Celeste.

She smiled underwater.

Then swam away with the capsule.

Mara surfaced.

The helicopter was burning.

The old woman was gone.

Marco was gone.

Dante’s father was gone.

Dante reached her.

“Where’s the capsule?”

Mara looked toward the far shore.

Celeste stood beside a black SUV.

Holding the capsule.

She raised it between two fingers.

Then crushed it.

A bright blue light flashed from inside the broken metal.

Celeste looked at Mara and smiled.

“You were right about one thing.”

She opened the SUV door.

“This war was never about a ledger.”

She got in.

“It was about you.”

The convoy disappeared into the darkness.

Mara stood in the river, shaking.

Then the first memory returned.

Not a fragment.

Everything.

She remembered the fire.

She remembered the vault.

She remembered the faces of every man who had murdered her family.

And she remembered the final instruction her father had whispered before the mansion burned.

If they ever find you, burn the empire to the ground.

Mara looked at Dante.

Her eyes were no longer afraid.

May you like

They were lethal.

“The war starts tonight.”
