Chapter 5 - THE GALA OF SHADOWS

The night of the charity gala arrived with a blinding display of wealth and elegance. Chandeliers glittered like diamonds across the high ceilings of the grand ballroom, classical music drifted through the air, and high-society elites in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos mingled over flutes of champagne.

True to his word, Dante had smuggled Mia and me into the private panic room hours before the first guest arrived. It was a spacious, hidden suite behind the library bookshelf, equipped with live security monitors showing every corner of the mansion. Mia was fast asleep on a plush velvet sofa, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit, blissfully unaware that a storm was brewing just beyond the reinforced steel walls.

I sat in front of the monitors, my eyes glued to Camera 4, which showed the main hallway leading to the study.

Downstairs, Dante played his part to perfection. He laughed with politicians, toasted with business partners, and moved through the crowd with effortless charisma. But I could see the tension in the tight set of his jaw, the way his eyes constantly scanned the perimeter.

At 9:45 PM, Marcus made his move.

On the monitor, I watched the head of security slip away from the ballroom entrance, checking his watch before walking briskly down the east corridor toward Dante’s private study. He pulled a master key card from his jacket pocket, swiped it against the digital lock, and slipped inside.

"He's in," I whispered into the small intercom connected to Dante’s earpiece.

A few moments later, Dante excused himself from a conversation with the mayor, casually walking toward the elevators as if heading to the restroom. In reality, he was heading straight for the trap.

On the screen, Marcus was hunched over the desk, frantically trying to access the main terminal. He didn't hear the heavy oak door open behind him.

Dante stepped into the study, leaving the door wide open so the ambient music from the hallway filtered in.

"Looking for something, Marcus?" Dante's voice echoed through the monitor speakers, cool and lethal.

Marcus froze. Slowly, agonizingly, he turned around, his right hand inching toward the concealed holster beneath his suit jacket.

"Boss," Marcus forced a tight, nervous smile. "I—I thought I heard a disturbance in the east wing. Just checking the perimeter."

"With a flash drive downloading encrypted files from my private terminal?" Dante asked, stepping closer. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer predatory pressure in his posture made Marcus flinch. "You've been loyal for ten years, Marcus. You ate at my table. You stood guard over my family. And all the while, you sold my routes to the Morettis. You even arranged the brake failure on my wife's car, didn't you?"

Marcus's face drained of all color. Realizing the game was up, his facade of loyalty shattered completely. His hand darted toward his gun with lightning speed.

"You're dead, Valenti!" Marcus roared, drawing his weapon.

Bang!

The gunshot echoed through the mansion, shaking the walls.
