Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Broken

Three months later, the cold snow of winter had melted into the bright, green warmth of early spring in Upstate New York.
The Moretti estate had changed dramatically. The sterile, cold fortress was now filled with the sound of laughter, running footsteps, and toy trucks scattered across the manicured lawns. Dante had systematically dismantled the corrupt elements of his empire, stepping back from the violent street wars to focus entirely on legitimate, high-level corporate enterprises and real estate developments.
Eli was thriving. He had a dog—a golden retriever named Buster that Dante had surprised him with for his eighth birthday—and was enrolled in a prestigious local school where he made friends easily.
I sat on the wide stone porch overlooking the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley, sipping a warm cup of tea. The front door opened, and Dante stepped out, wearing a simple navy sweater and jeans—a stark contrast to the tailored suits and body armor he used to wear every day.
He walked over, sliding his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder.
"What are you thinking about?" he whispered, pressing a soft kiss to my neck.
"About how different life is now," I smiled, leaning back against his chest. "A year ago, I was sitting in a tiny cottage in Cape Loray, terrified of the world, trying to raise our son alone. I thought I would never see you again."
Dante wrapped his arms tighter around me. "I spent seven years living in darkness, Nora. You and Eli brought the light back into my life. I'll spend the rest of my days making up for the time we lost."
Down on the lawn, Eli was kicking a soccer ball with Buster chasing after him, his laughter echoing across the estate.
"He looks so much like you when he smiles," I murmured.
"He gets his kind heart from you," Dante replied softly. "He saved me, Nora. If I hadn't found him that night, I would have continued down a path that eventually would have destroyed me."
He gently turned me around in his arms so I was facing him. His dark gray eyes were filled with an intensity that took my breath away—the same heat I had fallen in love with ten years ago, but now tempered with profound peace and maturity.
"Nora," Dante said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box.
My heart skipped a beat.
He opened the box, revealing a breath-taking ring featuring an antique cut diamond set in platinum—the original ring he had given me when we were twenty-three, beautifully restored and polished.

"I know we were robbed of our first marriage by lies and fear," Dante said, dropping to one knee on the porch. "I know I can't undo the pain of the last seven years. But I want to build a real future with you. One built on truth, love, and family. Will you marry me again, Nora? Not as a mob boss's wife, but as my partner, my best friend, and the love of my life?"
Tears of joy welled in my eyes as I looked down at him. "Yes," I choked out, laughing through my tears. "Yes, Dante! A thousand times yes!"
