Chapter 9 - The Trial of the PalaceThe trial lasted four months.
Chancellor Varen faced charges for treason, kidnapping, attempted murder, embezzlement and conspiracy.
Queen Celeste testified.
So did Gideon.
Dr. Marlowe.
Seraphina.
And eventually Evelyne.
When the princess entered the courtroom, everyone expected her to defend her mother.
Instead she told the truth.
“My mother committed crimes because she was afraid.”
Evelyne looked toward Celeste.
“Fear explains behavior. It does not erase responsibility.”
Celeste cried.
Varen attempted to blame everything on her.
But financial documents proved he had controlled the network.
The royal treasury recovered millions.
More importantly, records revealed hundreds of ordinary families harmed by his schemes.
Lily attended only part of the trial.
She did not enjoy watching people suffer.
Even guilty people.
She preferred rebuilding.
The Royal Lands Foundation returned farms.
Canceled fraudulent debts.
Reopened schools in villages whose budgets Varen had stolen.
The palace newspapers began calling her:
THE ROSE PRINCESS.
Lily hated the name.
Elias loved it.
Seraphina laughed every time she saw it.
Mother and daughter were still learning each other.
That was harder than either expected.
Seraphina wanted to recover eighteen years immediately.
Breakfast together.
Horse rides.
Stories.
Photographs.
Lily sometimes felt overwhelmed.
One evening she finally said:
“You can’t make up eighteen years by filling every hour.”
Seraphina froze.
Lily regretted the sharpness immediately.
Then Seraphina nodded.
“You’re right.”
“I want you.”
Lily took her hand.
“But I also want the life I already had.”
“Elias.”
“Yes.”
“The gardens.”
“Yes.”
“Marian.”
Lily’s eyes filled.
“Especially Marian.”
Seraphina looked toward the portrait Lily kept of her adoptive mother.
“I wish I could thank her.”
“She thought she failed you.”
“No.”
Seraphina answered instantly.
“She gave me the one thing I couldn’t give you.”
“What?”
“A childhood.”
Lily cried.
They held each other.
No titles.
No crown.
Only two women trying to build a relationship after surviving the same crime differently.
Varen was eventually convicted.
Celeste received a reduced sentence because of her testimony and cooperation.
Evelyne visited her mother regularly.
She never excused her.
But she did not abandon her either.
King Rowan surprised the kingdom by announcing sweeping reforms restricting the private financial power of royal advisors.
No single minister would ever again control royal records, treasury access and security appointments.
At the ceremony, he handed the first signed copy to Lily.
“This started with you.”
“No.”
She looked toward the white roses surrounding the courtyard.
“It started with Marian.”
That evening, the royal family visited Marian’s grave.
Seraphina placed the golden locket against the stone.
For a moment Lily panicked.
“You’re leaving it?”
Seraphina shook her head.
“No.”
She touched the inscription.
“I’m showing it to her.”
Then she whispered:
“You kept her alive.”
Lily stood between the mother who gave her life and the father who raised her.
And for the first time, she understood she did not have to choose which family was real.
