Chapter 6 - The Fallout

By Monday morning, the full weight of the truth had crashed down on my family’s pristine, fake lives.
Vanessa’s social media accounts were flooded with thousands of angry comments from horrified viewers. Her main sponsor officially severed ties with her in a public statement, citing "zero tolerance for child cruelty and unsafe pranks." Over half of her followers disappeared overnight, and her monetization was suspended indefinitely pending a community guidelines review.
My father, a senior executive at a local construction firm that relied heavily on community reputation, was called into his CEO’s office. A client had seen the viral footage floating around local community groups and expressed concern over doing business with a man who laughed at a child’s physical suffering.
At 10:00 AM, my mother called me from a private number. When I answered, her voice was no longer arrogant or commanding. She was weeping hysterically.
"Maya, please!" she sobbed. "Delete those posts! Vanessa is losing everything! People are calling our house, leaving terrible messages! Your father’s job is on the line!"
"You didn't care about Lily's health, Mom," I said, my tone flat and unemotional. "You cared about a party."
"We didn't know the paint would hurt her eyes!" she wailed. "It was supposed to be a joke! Family plays jokes on each other!"
"A joke is when everyone laughs," I replied. "When a child is crying on her knees and you laugh at her, that’s abuse. And when you demand money from the mother who saved her, that’s delusion."
"Please, Maya," she begged. "We're your family! You’re destroying us!"
"No, Mom," I said gently. "You destroyed yourselves. You built a life out of cruelty and lies, and you just got caught."
I hung up the phone.
An hour later, Arthur Vance formally served my family with legal documents.
We filed for a permanent Restraining Order against my parents and sister to ensure they could never come within 500 feet of Lily or her school. Furthermore, we served Vanessa with a formal lawsuit demanding full restitution for Lily’s medical bills, psychological counseling costs, and damages for the unauthorized commercial use of Lily’s image over the past two years.

When the process server delivered the papers to my parents' home, my father reportedly threw the documents onto the driveway in a fit of rage. But the law did not care about his temper.
For the first time in my life, I wasn't running around trying to clean up their messes or placate their anger. I was standing firm behind a fortress of legal protection, watching them finally face the consequences of their actions.
