Chapter 10 - The Locked Floor

The gala erupted into confusion. Guests shouted as emergency lights flickered on, casting the room in red.

Ruth ran toward the service corridor. Lenora caught her wrist.

“If you go downstairs, they will arrest you.”

“My son is down there.”

“Then you must be clever enough not to follow the obvious path.”

Lenora opened a concealed door behind a curtain.

Beyond it was a narrow stairwell leading below the courthouse.

“Why are you helping me?” Ruth asked.

“Because I am tired of my son mistaking control for love.”

They descended three flights. Voices echoed above them. Lenora moved quickly despite her heels.

“Nico was born in Room Eleven?” Ruth asked.

“No. He was found there.”

“By whom?”

“Victor.”

“Was he one of the eleven?”

Lenora stopped. “He was the twelfth.”

The stairwell door opened onto an underground parking level. At the far end, a maintenance van waited with its rear doors open.

Eli was inside, kneeling beside a security guard. The guard’s face was bleeding.

“Mom?”

Ruth hurried toward him.

“I’m fine,” Eli said. “They caught me copying the server.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“The guard is bleeding.”

“You’re both bleeding.”

Eli stood. “We need to move.”

Nico emerged from a concrete pillar holding a pistol.

Lenora stepped in front of Ruth. “Put it down.”

“You brought them here.”

“You brought them here when you threatened an old woman.”

Nico looked at Eli. “Give me the drive.”

Eli held up a black device. “You want it?”

“I want the copy.”

“Then come get it.”

Nico lifted the pistol.

Ruth saw the security guard reach toward his belt. She kicked a metal bucket across the concrete. It struck the guard’s boot, and he stumbled into a parked car. The alarm shrieked.

Eli threw the drive beneath the van.

Nico fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Lenora screamed, and Ruth pulled her behind a pillar. Eli tackled Nico. The pistol skidded across the floor.

Nico struck Eli’s jaw. Eli hit him back. They grappled beside the van until the security guard recovered and slammed Nico against the hood.

“Police are on the way,” the guard said.

“You’re lying,” Nico replied.

“No,” Lenora said. “I called them.”

Nico looked at his mother as if she had become a stranger.

Sirens rose above the building.

Eli crawled beneath the van and retrieved the drive. “I got the server directory.”

“Not all of it,” Ruth said.

“Enough.”

Nico’s eyes fixed on Ruth. “You think this ends with an arrest?”

“It begins with one.”

He smiled despite the blood at his lip. “You still don’t understand. The archive is not the danger. The archive is the shield.”

“A shield for whom?”

“For every family whose name is about to be dragged into court. For every child who will learn their parents lied. For every person who built a life on a record that cannot survive daylight.”

Eli stood beside Ruth. “Records don’t ruin lives. People do.”

Nico’s gaze moved to him. “Ask your mother what happened to the infant she carried home.”

Ruth felt Eli stiffen.

Nico continued, “Ask her why Mara Soto never received a photograph. Ask her why June Calder moved money into Ruth’s name. Ask her why Daniel died without ever correcting the record.”

The police entered the garage.

Nico was handcuffed, but his expression remained triumphant.

Lenora turned to Ruth. “He is right about one thing.”

“Which thing?”

“There is another record. One that proves who Eli was before June took him.”

Eli looked at her. “Where?”

May you like

Lenora pointed toward the courthouse foundation.

“Under Room Eleven.”
