Chapter 9 - Evelyn’s Last LetterEvelyn lost control of Whitaker Biomedical.
Civil settlements consumed much of her fortune.
She was not imprisoned for being cruel.
Cruelty itself is not always illegal.
But the company paid enormous penalties related to records, governance failures, and historical intellectual-property misconduct.
Evelyn moved away.
Years passed.
Then she wrote Hope a letter.
Daniel gave it to me unopened.
“Your decision.”
Hope was twelve.
We discussed it.
She chose to read it.
The letter began badly.
Everything I did came from wanting the best for this family.
Hope rolled her eyes.
Then continued.
Apparently age had finally forced Evelyn to examine parts of herself.
She wrote about Daniel’s childhood.
How terrified she had been that people would pity him.
How she believed perfection was armor.
How she confused removing visible difference with removing pain.
Then:
I taught your father to hate the part of himself that looked like you.
Hope stopped.
Daniel was sitting across the room.
His eyes filled.
The next line:
That may be the cruelest thing I ever did.
Hope finished the letter.
Then asked:
“Do I have to forgive her?”
“No,” Daniel said immediately.
She looked at him.
“Do you?”
Daniel thought.
“Some days.”
That answer satisfied her.
She folded the letter.
“Can I write back?”
“If you want.”
Hope wrote only three sentences.
I don’t think my hand is a mistake.
Dad doesn’t anymore either.

I hope someday you don’t.
She mailed it herself.
