Chapter 3 - THE NAME HE DARE NOT SPEAK

The west conference room was quiet. The windows faced away from the ocean, so the light inside felt flat and gray. Richard sat at the far end of the long table, head in his hands. He looked up when I entered, and the expression on his face twisted something deep inside my chest. Guilt. Fear. And beneath it all… a flicker of genuine regret.
I pulled out a chair and sat across from him. The distance between us felt enormous. Once, we had been children running through our father’s gardens. Once, he had been the cousin I loved most in all the world. Now he sat on the other side of a chasm dug with lies, forgeries, and stolen millions.
"You asked to see me," I said. "Talk."
Richard swallowed hard. He looked thinner than I remembered. Lines had deepened around his eyes. His hands trembled where they rested on the table.
"Amelia… before I say anything… you have to understand. I didn’t want to do it. I never meant to hurt you. They… they made me."
"They?" I leaned forward slightly. "Who, Richard? Vanessa?"
He shook his head quickly. "Vanessa knows nothing. She’s greedy and cruel, yes—but she doesn’t understand any of this. She’s just… a tool. Like me."
"Then who?"
Richard fell silent. He glanced toward the door, as if half-expecting someone to burst through it. Then he leaned forward, his voice dropping to a trembling whisper.
"The Silent One. That’s what they’re called. I’ve never met them face-to-face. Never heard their real name. But they contacted me almost two years ago, right after you left. Sent an envelope. Inside were things… things I did, years ago. Mistakes. Crimes I thought no one would ever discover."
My blood ran cold. "Blackmail."
"Complete and total," Richard said, his voice cracking. "They told me: take temporary control of the resort. Sign the documents we send. Transfer the funds we instruct. And if I obey… they stay silent. If I refuse… I go to prison. Vanessa leaves me. My children hate me. Everything I’ve built is destroyed."
"So you forged my signature," I said. "Over and over again. Stole millions. Let them treat me like trash in my own lobby. All because someone threatened you?"
Richard flinched. "At first I told myself it was temporary. That I would find a way to stop them. But they got bolder. The amounts grew larger. The orders grew more dangerous. And then… they told me something that terrified me more than prison."
He paused, breathing hard.
"They said… you were never coming back. That they had arranged for you to disappear. And that if I ever told anyone… I would be next."
The words hung in the quiet room. "Disappear?"
"That was why I told everyone you were ill. Why I ordered security to turn you away if you arrived. Why I let Vanessa do what she did. I was trying to protect you as much as myself. I thought… if you were kept away… you might stay safe."
I stared at him. The explanation was terrible. And yet… parts of it fit. The photographs Peter had mentioned. The lies about my sanity. The deliberate effort to paint me as unstable before I ever stepped through the doors.
"You could have called me," I said. "Sent an email. Anything."
"I tried!" Richard said, tears spilling over. "Every message I sent to you came back undelivered. Every call failed. They had cut us off completely. And they told me it was a warning—that they were watching every word I spoke."
He reached across the table, his hand trembling.
"Amelia… you have to believe me. I didn’t want any of this. And then yesterday… before you arrived… I received one final instruction. Transfer everything that remains to the account in the Caymans. Sign the last document. And then… vanish. Because once I did… there would be nothing left for you to find."
"The document with the second signature," I said. "I saw it. Who signed it?"
Richard went pale. "I don’t know. It arrived by courier. Already signed. Every time. I only ever saw that handwriting. Never a name. Never a face. But I traced one payment. Just one. Months ago. And the trail… it led somewhere I never expected."
"Where?" I pressed. "Tell me, Richard."
He looked at me, eyes wide with a terror so deep it felt final.
"To the law firm that handles all our family affairs. The firm Father used. The firm that prepared his will. And the only person authorized to sign on behalf of the trust… was Arthur Sterling."
The name hit me like a physical blow.
Arthur. My godfather. My father’s oldest friend. The man who had taught me everything I knew about business. Who had stood at my graduation. Held my hand at my parents’ funeral. Who had been like family to me since before I could remember.
"That’s impossible," I whispered.
"I know," Richard said. "I refused to believe it too. But the account numbers matched. The authorization codes matched. Every single piece of paper pointed to him. And then… I remembered something Father said once, months before he died. He pulled me aside and told me: If anything ever happens to me, and Arthur asks you to sign something… do it only if Amelia stands beside you. Promise me."
Richard breathed out shakily.
"I asked him why. He wouldn’t say. Only that Arthur carries a secret older than all of us. And that one day… it could destroy everything."
My mind spun. Arthur. Gentle, steady Arthur. Who had never asked for anything. Who had always stood quietly in the background. Who had given me away at my parents’ funeral.
"Why would he do this?" I said more to myself than to Richard. "He has no reason. He has everything he ever needed."
"I don’t know," Richard said. "But I do know this: the document you found… the one with his signature? It grants him full legal authority over Voss Meridian. Authority to sell. To dismantle. To erase us completely. And it claims… that Father signed it voluntarily, days before his death."
My heart hammered. "Father never signed anything of the sort."
"I know you believe that," Richard said. "But Arthur has the witnesses. The dates. The notary stamps. Everything. And if he presents it in court… he wins. Everything."
Silence stretched between us. Long and terrible.
Richard leaned forward again, voice dropping lower still.
"Amelia… before you go… there’s one more thing. Something he said in one of his messages. Something I didn’t understand until today."
"What?"
"He said: When she returns, tell her this is not theft. It is repayment. For a debt her father refused to settle."
A debt.
My father.
Arthur.
And a secret older than all of us.
I stood slowly. My legs felt weak.
"Stay here, Richard. Do not leave this room. Do not speak to anyone. Especially not Arthur. Promise me."
"I promise," he said. "But Amelia… be careful. He knows you’re here. He knew the moment you activated the override. And his last message to me… said simply: Tell Amelia welcome home. She has arrived just in time to witness the end."
I walked to the door. My hand touched the handle.
"Richard… who is Arthur to my father? Truly?"
Richard was quiet so long I thought he would not answer. Then he spoke, so softly I barely heard.
"Father once told me they were brothers. Not by blood. By oath. And that Arthur gave up everything—his name, his inheritance, his entire future—so that Father could build this empire. And Father swore… one day… he would repay him."
I stepped out into the hallway. The door clicked shut behind me.
Everything inside me wanted to run. To call Arthur. To demand answers. But Richard’s words echoed in my mind. He has been waiting for you. He expects you.
And then my phone buzzed in my pocket. A single text message. No number displayed. Just words that turned my blood to ice:
*You have spoken to the wrong cousin. Now come speak to the right godfather. I am waiting in your father’s study. Come alone.*
May you like
I stared at the screen. The message had been sent seconds after I left the room.
Arthur was already here. In my resort. Waiting for me.
