Chapter 6 - Vanessa Sinclair Takes the Stand
Thomas Sinclair was arrested six weeks later.
Vanessa tried to leave for France.
Federal agents stopped her at JFK.
Charges spread across two generations.
Corporate fraud.
Conspiracy.
Witness coercion.
Medical-debt manipulation.
Securities violations.
Obstruction.
Thomas also faced charges connected to Jonathan Whitmore’s death.
Vanessa blamed Lucas.
Lucas blamed Thomas.
Thomas blamed a dead medic until the medic turned out to be alive.
The truth became inconveniently crowded.
At trial, Vanessa looked beautiful.
Of course.
White suit.
Hair immaculate.
No engagement ring.
The defense portrayed her as a daughter manipulated by an authoritarian father.
Some of that was true.
Then prosecutors showed her messages.
Once Adrien signs, I want Maya gone.
Lucas:
Why her specifically?
Vanessa:
Because he looks at her like she remembers who he was before money.
Maya sat in the gallery.
Adrien looked down.
Another message:
If she refuses the statement, accelerate Claire’s debt. She’ll choose her mother.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
The prosecutor asked:
“Did Maya Coleman ever threaten you?”
“No.”
“Did she attempt to interfere with your engagement?”
“No.”
“Did she pursue Adrien?”
“No.”
“Then why target her?”
Vanessa looked toward Maya.
For the first time, her confidence cracked.
“Because I knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That Adrien loved her.”
Adrien stopped breathing.
Maya looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa continued.
“He didn’t even know it yet.”
The courtroom remained silent.
“He watched her.”
“Trusted her.”
“When she spoke, he listened differently.”
The prosecutor asked:
“So you decided to destroy her credibility?”
“Yes.”
“Threaten her mother’s treatment?”
“Yes.”
“Frame her for theft?”
Vanessa cried.
“Yes.”
“Because your fiancé cared about her?”
Vanessa looked furious.
“Because she could ruin everything!”
The prosecutor waited.
There.
Not love.
Everything.
The merger.
Power.
Father’s approval.
Future control.
Maya had become dangerous simply by being someone Adrien might trust more than the plan.
Vanessa’s lawyer tried to redirect.
“Did Adrien humiliate you by kissing Maya publicly?”
“Yes.”
“Did that cause emotional distress?”
“Yes.”
“Would you agree that his behavior was impulsive?”
“Yes.”
Adrien almost laughed.
They were still trying to preserve the instability argument.
Then Rebecca produced ballroom security footage.
Thirty minutes before the kiss, Vanessa had told Lucas:
If he protects Maya, trigger the psychiatric clause.
Vanessa went completely still.
The kiss had not created the plan.
It activated one already waiting.
The jury understood.
Vanessa was convicted on most major financial and coercion-related charges.
Thomas Sinclair’s trial ended even worse.
Dr. Price testified.
Jonathan’s archived records corroborated him.
Thomas received a sentence that would keep him imprisoned for the remainder of his likely life.
Lucas received substantially less because of cooperation.
Nobody felt sorry for him.
Not even Lucas.
At sentencing, he told Adrien:
“You trusted me.”
Adrien replied:
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I believe you.”
Lucas looked relieved.
Then Adrien added:
“That doesn’t make you my friend again.”
The relief disappeared.
Consequences.
